Honda Civic Type R Concept

Chief designer Masaru Hasegawa:

"Creating a high output turbocharged engine is relatively easy, but our aim is to retain the VTEC characteristics, so it’s high revving, with great responses and easy to control performance."

If what I understand becomes reality, 7k redline, then there is no high revving, with all due respect to Honda.

i know its different and for a new car although its a concept i actually quite like it im normally against new hondas due to recent releases but this is probably the only modern hot hatch i think looks pretty good, but am i the only person that is dissapointed with the fact its turbo'd, just doesnt seem right :\

rear end looks hella jdm !
10/10
hope the product car will be like this concept !

For now turbo is the future. Next gen type r will most likely be a hybrid. Gotta move with the times, but fortunately Honda built some solid cars in the 90's so we will still be able to enjoy the raw B-series for years to come.

Personally I don't mind the turbo. I do hate the fact that it's probably redlining at 7k rpm. 8600rpm + turbo would be madness.

I think the car looks brilliant, however is it just me or does it look really really heavy, in fact it almost looks as big if not bigger than the FN2. Let's hope they have some sort of clever differential that really pulls the car round the corners instead of a repeat of the last generations under steering nightmare.

On a positive note there is a rumour that this car will have independent rear suspension as quoted: "The new Civic Tourer, which will be launched in 2014, is fitted with active rear suspension - with comfort, normal and dynamic settings. It is thought that this system will be used in the Type-R, in conjunction with a mechanical limited slip differential, meaning the Ring target could well be within reach"

If this is the case, I will 100% most definitely be on the order list for one of these.

Indeed, I think it looks brilliant. Lets just hope it doesn't weigh too much. In fact, I'm going to take a guess at its weight: 1,310kg. It'll be interesting to see how much of the concept details are carried over to the production model - the wheels should go in the bin though - subjective matter of course.

Honda's FWD 'ring record intentions is an interesting one. I didn't expect them to shout so early in the development process and make a big deal about potentially smashing Renault's record. IMO, 'ring records are a bit of a pissing contest anyway and tend not to mean a lot for buyers and end users. And if Renault give the "R26.R" treatment to their current Megane, Honda could have quite a fight on their hands. Worst still, if they fail to break the FWD record, they'll look like complete tits.

There are still quite a few unknowns with the new Type-R; could be a torsion beam rear and a non-mechanical diff. I think we'll be drip-fed throughout the year with finalised spec and details including price which could be close to £30k. I hope they don't make the new car overly complicated though, and maintain the reliability and relative simplicity of past generations.

Most importantly, it should be thoroughly enjoyable to drive and a proper drivers' car. I'm looking forward to it and if they nail it, I might just be queuing outside Phoenix Honda in 2015.

looks very nice ..but at a rumoured £30k price tag would I swap it for my fd2 ...

hmmm ...no ...

I know turbo cars are the future for economy/tax reasons maybe only to us enthesiasts but to me its just not a honda in the sense we all know and love

I suppose there are still plenty b series about

It will be interesting to see the ring times when they come out, but it does look heavy

Hope it doesnt redline at 7k lol

They can't call it high reving and have the limiter at 7k lol astra turbos will do that! Got to be 8+ to even be considered high now-a-days.

The rear lights are awesome. It would be great if they did keep them for the production build. The front also seems more menacing, a really steep low down front end. Reminds me of the dc5 a little from side profile of the front.

Looks to be great, would have been more awesome with a N/A to keep it as natural as it can possibly get for a type-r. Still, a 280bhp turbo with a very reliable engine (hopefully), should prove to get awesome gains with the tuners.

Very impressed with this, understeer will be its greatest challenge with that power to the front wheels.

If it has an LSD it will probably do better than almost all hot hatches that don't have a true LSD.

Honda also wants to compete on power with other manufacturers. If you want to keep it sensible enough for mass production then they'd have to build a 2,5-3 litre 6 cilinder as pistonspeed will be too high for a 2,5-3 litre 4 cilinder. You can imagine what that would do with weight and weight distribution in a car like this...I don't mind the turbo, I just want a 8600rpm redline :(

If vauxhall can build a 280hp 2L then Honda can.
The vauxhall even has an LSD so the competition is higher than you might think.

I don't think that any car company, Honda included can build a 2l 280hp N/A engine that is both reliable, driveable ánd cheap enough to put in a mass produced car with competitive price. They will really need a turbo or produce a bigger engine. The latter is not good for handling so turbo would be a better option.

Vauxhall has an LSD en Mazda 3 MPS too but which other competitors have it?

The power quoted 280 is PS not bhp not sure what that equates to

Something like 277bhp
More or less the same
Even with the lsd it's naturally going to be a challenge for a fwd
