Hey guys,

We've been busy setting up our US branch and in the process, I somehow found myself in another car.

I remember the first time I saw a car like this. It was the summer of 1987 and I was at my grandma's house.

My dad and I pulled up and saw his brother washing his then new car. A bright red Corolla GTS hatchback.

At the time it was probably the closest I've ever been to a new car and the fact that it was red - I associated with the only other red cars I knew of which were Ferraris.

Fast forward some 13 yrs and my friend's younger brother was sporting an AE86. My childhood fondness of the car was somewhat diminished because it was a two tone metallic grey/black combo - not to mention it was speckled with rust.

Still, I could see how the car had potential due to Hot Version/Best Motoring videos. It wasn't until I had a chance to drive the car did I understand - that despite not having any power (by modern standards) the car was exceptionally nimble and fun.

I vowed then, that one day I would have one of my own.

23 years after I first saw my uncle's car, I found what it is I was looking for and jumped on the opportunity.

I picked up my 86 about a month ago from Kentucky and had her shipped all the way to Utah where my shop is located. I originally had plans to shuttle her all the way up to the pacwest - back to Vancouver BC, but I simply do not have any space for it at home.

Some pix:

The very first pic I took of her after she arrived and was unloaded off the hauler.

Put the lip back on ... albeit with zipties and not trick custom bracket work like Tsuchiya did on his :arf:

Hey guys,

thanks for all the kind words. It's really not much by today's standards, but I think that is part of the appeal. Cars today are burdened by so much luxury (any more than 6 speakers imo, is just insane).

I bought this car to teach myself how to drive an FR platform - my only experience with FR is limited to driving my friends' cars FD3S, Supra, AE86, S2000 etc. but given that they are cars that I do not own, I would just peddle around cautiously.

From a Honda vs. Toyota aspect, I really wished that Honda built something like this for the US market and the closest thing I can think of is the Honda Beat. It's really hard to explain to the younger kids these days how 100hp +/- 20hp can be fun in a lightweight chassis when there's DSG/SMG/ATTS/turbochargers/AWD at a reasonable cost (used).

One thing Toyota really dropped the ball on was the transmission on the AE86. It's got the worst 2-3 shift ever and a really strange short 5th. It's like they put a bunch of random ratios in a hat and had 5 people from 5 different departments choose the gearing.

With my resources, I'm looking into offering some gearing options for this car and so far, we do have 2 final drives, a 4.8x and a 5.3x. The latter will require the TRD 3sp close gears (tall 1-2-3).

The stock T50 gear ratios for the AE86 if anybody cares.

And one with the TRD 3sp and proposed 0.767 5th gear in BLUE

The key thing to look at here is the SHIFT POINT. The transmission in blue/TRD 3sp has shift points all in the 56xxrpm range except for 5th gear which is 59xxrpm to account for the engine's low torque and aero drag. This makes the stock transmission look really random doesn't it?

One thing's for sure, the 4AG motor does apparently produce better torque than the B16A but it runs outta breath at 7800rpm whereas most B16As are happy to rev at least 8400rpm even if there's no power produced up there...at least one could take advantage of closer gears....

can't win em all I suppose...I am lookin' at a 6sp option from an Altezza though!
