Halal

I do think it's pretty harsh to cut the throat of anything without stunning it first so that it cannot know/feel what is happening.

Would you like the same to happen to you?

Honestly, I am a little puzzled as to how it is permitted in the western world, but again, you can't risk offending a muslim can you, so best to just let them do what ever they want.

I'm indifferent about the process, animals are treated poorly all the time if it bothered me I'd be a vegetarian.

Go Vegan, the typical vegetarian diet is awful from an animal treatment point of view, dairy products cause a massive amount on unnecessary slaughter! I'm fine with eating meat, I think you have to look at the whole thing from a balanced point of view.

Interesting responses - some relevant and others just plain silly and ignorant.

Around 90% of animals that go through the halal process are stunned and killed quickly without allowing them to regain conciousness. In fact, this method of killing animals isn't too far away from non-halal, traditional ways - the key differences with halal being the use of hand tools instead of machines, and that it's done in the name of God.

Therefore, I fail to see how the animal is "tortured". Lets not pretend otherwise, there isn't a 100% nice and friendly way of killing an animal where it doesn't feel any kind of pain.

Another worrying misconception relates to Muslims being "offended" if certain food chains didn't offer halal products and that such people were constantly complaining and/or pressuring companies to offer halal - it simply isn't true, and I speak from my own experience and of others. If the likes of KFC, Subway, Nandos et al. were to all become non-halal overnight, it wouldn't be the end of the world; there are plenty of other places that cater for the Muslim population.

From the perspective of the companies now offering or increasing the availability of such products, at the end of the day they're businesses. It's clear these companies are looking to appeal to a wider market and in turn increase sales. I know of at least 2 restaurants in Glasgow belonging to big names that could only dream of the profits they're making if they didn't offer halal food.

Those refusing to eat halal should also remember not to go to the regular takeaway for those kebabs.

I've lived in this country my entire life (Glasgow specifically) and not once have I heard a non-Muslim refuse to eat or complain about halal food. From my own experience, both Muslims and non-Muslims with differing backgrounds have all happily ate together in halal takeaways or restaurants for many, many years. Long may it continue.

That's all well and good, but when companies like Subway take off items such as Bacon, because a religious group said they don't want it (whilst a large group of people said to keep it) that's when the problems come about.

I refuse to eat Halal products, why should I be a British person in Britain, dining by foreign standards!?

It's absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't go to a Muslim country and.... Oh wait im basically in a Muslim country now.

I completely understand. As a Muslim, I have no problems with the likes of Subway offering bacon - I simply don't buy it if I go there! I had a fillet fish meal from McDonalds the other day and I had no problem with them serving bacon to the guy next to me.

Why can't everyone be like you?

If I owned a food store, and someone came in and had a go about me serving certain types of food my immediate reply would be "don't order it then" simples.

Supply and Demand:

Has anyone checked the location of the 180 stores which now do not do bacon or pork and have switched to Halal meat?

I'd say they would be areas mostly populated by Muslims. Subway will know how much Bacon they sell, if its not enough they switch to cater for the population in that area, if the switch increases sales then it will be done, regardless of it being for a Muslim or a Jew.

Unless anyone has a petition or something they can prove, i find it hard to see that Subway would stop selling pork because of complaints by Muslims, its the Media that love playing on this and unfortunately people fall for it.

Most of the Halal meat, the animals are stunned first.

It is illegal to slaughter animals without stunning them first in the EU, however there licensed slaughter houses for Muslims and Jews in the UK on religious grounds. This is where its gone wrong, the law is the law and it should not change because of religion.

This should be the mentality of everyone haha

there is more than enough options to keep everybody happy. :)

I can't taste the difference between Halal and non-Halal food, so I don't really care to be quite honest.

Animals get killed to feed us every day, if they get killed in the name of a certain God then that makes no difference to me. I'm a Hindu and have no problem whatsoever eating Halal meat.

It actually opens up more doors for everyone, for example the Glasgow meets that were organised last year. We would go to the Nando's at the Quay and get dinner, then go and chill out at the meet. That one is Halal, which meant that any Muslim members could also enjoy the awesomeness that is Nando's chicken ;) I mean come on, who goes to Nando's and gets a salad... That one is always HEAVING, it makes sense in the world of business for the big food companies to have that prospect available.

Our country is changing, different cultures are evolving and I think we all need to embrace that. The people that aren't willing to change need to grow up IMO.

Just to say my previous post saying enlighten me wasnt meant in a sarcastic way, i like to think of myself as open minded so it was a genuine plea to educate my mentally challenged self haha.

I don't think people care so much about the animals, just another reason to bash on the government for "letting all these people into our country". Wast of space UKIP followers are lapping this up.

I remember going to a few Jdmy0 and HondaTech meets at the Quay where we would all happily eat together at Nandos. Those meets/meats were epic!

Yeah, those are the best ones! I'll get some organised for summer time before I go down south :nice:

Saksbb4 and jay_k, excellent responses.

So accurate, a complete non-issue for everyone involved. I was talking about this with some dudes tonight and youd never know based on taste.

Enlighten me?

Your comment is similar in tone to this, is albeit more extreme post, so I will respond to that, my comments apply to your own post:

This blatant display of nationalism is, in my opinion, an intense mark of ignorance; Dining by foreign standard? Dining by british standards? they are talking about making Subway halal - in what sense does subway, the ****ing crap fast food chain, evoke feelings of british culture and cuisine?

Why do you refuse to eat halal meat? it tastes the same. What is the difference apart from it offends your nationalistic sensibilities?

Britain is a muslin country? Get a grip. What do you even know about the muslim faith/culture apart from media bullshit?

Nationalism is the stamp of an idiot.

Just to say my previous post saying enlighten me wasnt meant in a sarcastic way, i like to think of myself as open minded so it was a genuine plea to educate my mentally challenged self haha.

If something doesn't actually effect your life in any real way, why care? Just get on with what makes you happy, im assuming moaning about 'foreigners' doesnt do this, so why waste the effort? Who are you to decide how other people should live?

I don't think people care so much about the animals, just another reason to bash on the government for "letting all these people into our country". Wast of space UKIP followers are lapping this up.

I 100% agree with you!I'm not big into religion but the untied kingdoms way of dealing with things like this is a joke!! Were not Muslim so there traditions, rituals and beliefs shouldn't be in force here!! If we went over there and cried about something I bet we would be laughed at or threatened. I believe everyone is equal but it's the same for foreigners coming into the country and getting jobs! They had a thing on TV about jobs and foreigners coming in and getting the jobs, surely if there putting it on TV it's clean cut there isn't due to the vast amount of people trying to get jobs and can't due to foreign workers, and before someone says that's crap it I fact isn't,how many foreign people here do you no isn't in a job and how many from here do you on isn't in a job? I've worked with polish and they are no different to us just trying to make a living but our country has to say enough is enough
