Hi all

I’m looking for a bit more power gains. Before anyone starts, I’m not interested in changed to a bigger B series engine or K swap or forced induction.

yes gains won’t be massive, I’m not looking for huge gains, just something a bit more than stock.

I have a 4-2-1 , dcat, deres pipe. That’s about it. I will be buying an ecu which goes without saying. I was looking at 70mm skunk 2 throttle body, skunk 2 intake, stage 2 cams and springs/retainers.

anyone have any info or advice, will I be wasting money on skunk 2 intake etc?

thanks guys

I will say to start with a aftermarket ecu, for example a hondata s300. The 70mm skunk2 throttle body is an overkill for your setup in my opinion.

Get the ecu, some lightweight wheels, Cold air intake (mugen, skunk, or any other good brand), a good catback system and you'll have great setup for daily and occasional autox events.

Make sure to find a tuner / dyno before buying and ecu and ask him with what aftermarket ecu he/she is comfortable tuning.

Without opening the engine to raise compression stage 2 cams will not perform well on a b16b.

I would not recommend a 70mm TB or S2 intake(assuming pro series which is almost identical to the type r intake). A Toda style 4-2-1 exhaust manifold coupled to a 2.5" decat and catback and then a custom remap to suit will probably net you 10-15bhp over stock.

I agree with the above posters. Get bolt-ons, an after market ECU and a good tune. If you want more power past the point of bolt-ons, it's gonna get very expensive very quickly simply because a B16b is already a highly tuned engine from the factory. Expect to spend 2500 or more pounds for another extra 15hp. Raise compression, bigger TB or even ITB's, run different cams with different valve springs and seats and more. You'll probably have a car that will drive worse in normal traffic.

There is a reason many people swap engines. Say you have to spend 4k to get to 220hp. Why not sell the B16b, add 4k to your budget and get a K20 and easily have 250hp, 6 gears and a much broader power band? There really isn't a good rational reason to stay with the B16b if you're looking for 200hp+ on a B16b besides "just because I can spend a fortune on every gained hp" or because you're running a car in a competition with rules prohibiting running another engine.

So:
  • Accept that you will not have much more than 200hp (which can be more than enough to have fun)
  • Spend massive amounts of money for just a little bit more and have a car that is less "streetable"
  • Get an engine swap (and kill a lot of recent cars in a straight line if choosing a K20)

thanks guys, for feedback. Think i will just stick with getting ECU After reading comments. I don’t want to swap engine.

Ah yes, shorter gearing might be your best bet to a faster car, at the cost of top speed though and higher rpm at motorway cruising. But that might be as much work as swapping an engine.

I think your best of sticking with the ECU yes and put the money in handling and/or brakes.
