Engine Cooling Upgrades - Help Needed

Hi All,

Had a track day at Donnington yesterday and its showed up some big issues, could only do 5-6 hot laps before overheating (blew the expansion hose clean off).

So now I want to upgrade obviously. I currently run a OEM DC2 radiator with the B16.

Thinking of changing the radiator to the Tegiwa alloy one:

And adding an oil cooler:

I've spoken to a friend and he says that these are too efficient for the road, even with a thermostatic sandwich plate, anyone else found this?

Whilst its all apart I want to add gauges. Oil pressure, temperature and water temp are my thoughts. Any recommendations? Would rather not spend a fortune as this is money I hadn't expected to spend but at the same time would be daft not to do it whilst its apart. Would rather an electric setup so I don't need to run feed lines into the car.

Pic for attention :p

I dont trust Tegiwa stuff, it's as cheap as ebay brand stuff, My blackworks racing rad worked perfect from @eternal blue 2000 on my B18cR. Look for a low temp fan switch and a good high power fan to draw in more air.
Thermostatic sandwich plate will be good because it'll only open up when it reaches a high temp so probably will rarely open up on the road.

I used to run AEM gauges which are good but you can always search around for some retro JDM stuff like Greddy etc on facebook, eBay or Buyee which will be a lot cheaper than AEM stuff.

Running Prosport gauges on my car no issues, decent quality and easy to install. Just a shout anyways :)

All you should need is a decent oil cooler. I was shocked when I saw how hot the oil gets on track, and that's even before the oem coolant temp gauge flinches. I've fitted a 22 row oil cooler I got from JJC and it had solved the issue , last time I was at Knockhill I could do lap after lap and that's with standard half rad and standard fan. The issue is not with the coolant, it's the oil. And do fit an oil temp gauge you'll be surprised how quickly the temp goes through the roof, I know I was.

I'm in the same situation. Installed gauges before going on Combe. Was absolutely roasting at nearly 30°c in the middle of the day.
After about 2-3 laps I was getting mega hot oil temps. Quite often around 120°c, at one point I hadn't noticed and it was up near 130°c!
However my water temp never went past 105°c

I have no personal experience with thermostatic oil coolers but a few people I know run them on road cars with no issues (Mishimoto set ups).
I'll be getting one eventually, when money allows. I'm still running the OEM DC2 radiator as well just with silicone hoses so will keep it for the time being

Cheers for all the help guys!! Seems like everyone is agreeing that its the oil that's the issue then...

I'm going to order prosport gauges today and a new radiator, as it would be daft not to replace it at this stage. The Tegiwa ones have a good review so I'm going to go for that - doesn't break the bank and seems good quality.

Then I'll keep an eye on oil temps and add a cooler after pay day if required!

Have also ordered a sniff tester just to give myself some peace of mind...

Personally I reckon the tegiwa rad is a complete waste of money, you'd be better off saving it for some track time when you get your oil cooler sorted. As I said, since fitting oil cooler I've had zero issues, that's with standard ek9 half rad! I'm still rocking b16b, might be different if you have B18.

if your concerned with over cooling the oil on the road then a simple block over the cooler when not on track will fix that.
i used a piece of cardboard before but now my car doesnt really see the road often

Sooo sniff test showed up a bad HG.

Hello darkness my old friend....

That's odd Hondas are not exactly known for HG failures (not that it can't happen of course). Just out of curiosity, what engine is it?

Ah seriously! :( Presume you did that after Mimms? What's your impulse to do with the engine then? Get a new one of fix it?

Yeah :( parts ordered and will be fixed within the week!

That's exactly what everyone's been saying to me - it's weird. B16A2 but it's definitely been apart at some point before I owned it, it made 164bhp on a conservative Dyno a few years ago so I'm interested to see what's inside it!

not good about the HG although time for a K swap?

Nope! I like B series and cant justify a K swap.

Sick of the car being away, just want to drive the damn thing and enjoy it!
