Elliott's B20 Vtec EK build

Little update;

Been trying to save a bit of money lately so less spending on the civic, but some AD08r's came up local for a bargain and I couldn't say no, so went to pick those up, ideally wanted 205's for the slips as they're 7j but these were too good to pass up, 195/50/15's, so went along to collect them in the jazz, i love this thing for a daily its ideal for this kind of thing, 4 slips with tyres, 4 ad08's and plenty room to spare!

So now the hard part, I want to get the slips powder coated before they go on, i cant decide on white or nardo gray to match my engine bay, had a play about on photo shop but that still hasn't helped, any thoughts?

Just read threw thread nice build bro keep it up. For me I'd go white with the slips

The weather was good enough for me to get out and polish/wax it the other weekend! Nothing has changed since my last updated but the car will be coming off the road towards the end of this month for some upgrades over the winter!

So did a little track session on Monday night at Teeside autodrome... first time here and at £35 for 3 hours open pit lane, its a bargain! Im guessing its normally a lot busier but the weather was putting people off, it rained on our sighting laps then nothing but sun from then on!

Really impressed with how the car drove, theres a lot more car than driver but I was feeling a lot more confidence in what the car is capable of!

Everything was going smoothly until...

Oil leak :(
The previous owner of the engine had a small leak at the edge of the head gasket when I bought the engine, I retorqued the head when I put the engine in and havnt had a problem since then, but at first thought I was thinking head gasket, it wasn't using loads of oil but I didn't want to risk going back out after that, I drove it home no problem and its still sat outside waiting for the weather to get better so I can see what the problem is, having spoke to a few people im hoping its just the vtec solenoid gasket, but I guess ill see!

Awhile since ive updated, anyway I thought the leak was the CAM seal, so bought myself a torque wrench and a new CAM seal, changed that… still a leak

So bought a new vtec solenoid gasket, went to undo the solenoid and noticed it was finger tight! Im guessing my engine mounts have shook this loose, so since I bought a gasket I changed it anyway, all tightened back up to OEM specs and no leak! Result but I could of saved myself a few quid, nevermind lesson learned.

Since then I tried buying 2 different BYS bumpers and got messed around twice, then luckily a local lad had one in much better condition so bought that, fitment isn’t the best but its booked in to get fitted and painted at the start of March ready for the good weather again.

Not much has changed with the car, made a start on doing my rear disc swap, got everything off and the camber arm is seized into my old hub, good excuse for some new bits, ordered some hardrace camber arms, bit of a mix up and ended up getting sent toe arms, Rival did me a good deal and ive ended up keeping the toe and camber arms, atleast I can do it all in one go and get both set up when the cars back out, having a crack at fitting everything this weekend so will let yous know how I get on

Looking good the bay colour is similar to mine! I see you were at teeside autodrome are you local? I’m from near Durham great little track for the price!

So not much to update, the daily Jazz was in for its MOT this week, expected it to fail on a lot more but only needed 2 tyres and a sidelight bulb... result!

Went to change the sidelight bulbs to some LED's I had laying around... what a chew on! Bumper off and headlights out seemed the best way

LED vs OEM

I didn't release you were local either ahaha! Yeah im in Newcastle and the civic's in a unit I rent a space in Sunderland. Teeside is great for the money, cant knock it at all , ill definitely be back there in summer. Are you on facebook? Theres a group "North East Honda's on there with a load of local lads on, good bunch and very helpful, have a monthly meet at Dalton Park too when the weathers good.

Yeah mate I’m on group but don’t post a lot on Facebook really, I’ve been to the meets a couple of times but just when the car was N/A so a while ago now! I hope to get to some more next year though!

Love this build man. We are friends in Facebook and always see your posts. If you ever want to sell that front spoon strut brace please let me know as I have a rear and want a front matching brace

Little update, rear disc conversion almost done!

Found a bit more motivation recently to pull my finger out with this, the first photo below was from November :(
image8.jpeg

So new hard race bits fitted, disc conversion bolted up, hel braided lines on too (didn't get a photo)

The handbrake pin was a right pain to get out, ended up grinding the head off and punching it through, so ive ordered 2 new ones of those
image6.jpeg

image7.jpeg

so now only things left on the disc conversion is to bolt up my hand brake cables, i also managed to lose the two bolts that bolt the calliper to the hub (14mm socket bolts i believe?) so if anyone knows the thread size and length i need that would be great?

My wiper arms were also in abit of a state and ive been meaning to do this since i bought the car, so gave those some gloss black paint, doesnt look to glossy though as i think it was to cold in the unit?

Thats it for now, wheels will be going for a refurb and ad08r's fitted at the end of the month, need to get the ball rolling on a few jobs and get it back out end of feb so i can actually use it all summer for once!

Well it’s about time I did this... I’ve had the clocks before I even had the car on the road!

Wish me luck this weekend

Cool little project man. Was about to give out about the rear drums but seen u changed them. LOL

Great thread stay at it man

Waiting for the updates... How did that BYS Bumber come out?

I guess this is due an update...

Eventually got the disc swap done, got the car back out the unit at the end of February, just in time for snow
image5.jpeg

I didn't think it was going to be bad so kept it outside, guess I was wrong!
image4.jpeg

So that put my plans for getting my alignment done and paint back abit, booked in for my alignment and when going to adjust the front camber this happened...
image11.jpeg

Moral of the story, don't cheap out when you already have decent hardrace bits everywhere else.... so I bought hardrace front arms too

That pushed me back another week, in that week I went to drive it to the carwash to get all the grime from the weather off, 2nd gear pull to the limited and the first bit of vtec this year I was greeted with this after
image2.jpeg

Rocker cover gasket completely **** itself, oil pouring out the front, im not sure this was from me having the rocker cover on and off a few times and maybe ive nicked it, or if it was due replacement anyway.... so that's changed now

Got my ad08's put on my slips, decided not to get them painted and im going to keep an eye out for a set of buddyclub p1's instead, but for the meantime....
image3.jpeg

(ignore the tyre sealent and general state of the car, it'll get washed soon I promise)

So eventually yesterday I got my alignment done;
11111111.png

Massive thanks to BTG Performance in Newcastle for that, ive went for 1.5 degrees camber on the front, 1 degree on the rear and 0 toe... a mild set up as its still majorly a road car and I can see how it feels from there

Bumper is booked in to be painted tomorrow!

Im hoping this is the end of my teething problems for this year, looking forward to using it throughout the summer.

Ill be doing Mimms at pod and Japfest if anyone from here is going this year?

Well eventually a proper update!

Picked up some carbon mirrors, wired them up to a spare plug I had from an old set of electric mirrors so theyre now plug and play, all sorted
image4.jpeg

And got the car back from the bodyshop and stuck them on....

image2.jpeg

image3.jpeg

Im absolutely **** scared of driving it with this fibreglass bumper, but ill get used to it.

Had a bit of an issue taking it out for the first time properly yesterday too, did a few pulls and everything was fine, car was running nice and vtec was coming in strong, cruised along the motorway for abit, dropped into third and then the clutch started slipping really badly, it did this in 3rd and all gears above. I'm thinking maybe the new grippy tyres have killed it? I cant think of any other reason why and that's the biggest thing ive changed that could possibly effect the clutch?

So the job is on to get a clutch and fit it this weekend in time for mimms next weekend, I got abit chewed off with this after just spending quite abit on it, but waking up this morning and realising how far its came and that I still have done everything myself other than paint/body work, I'll not give up just yet

A photo when I first picked the car up compared to today.
image1.jpeg

So little update....

Got the clutch changed in a weekend, eventually waxed and polished it
image2.jpeg

new clutch felt fine and did the 250miles each way to mimms... only for it too rain but i still enjoyed the show, shame about the strip being closed.
image1.png

So next up, an evening at teeside to see how much difference the new upgrades over the winter has made

Eventually bought some decent pads, well i tried too... EBC Redstuff but they came and i found out they were for 262mm callipers (theyre for sale if anyone is after any!), a quick message to Rival Motorsport and they sorted me some PBS pads to go and collect straight away, ideal!
Got those fitted (ignore the rusty calliper!)
image3.jpeg

Car felt amazing at Teeside, quite a few laps in and the car is running great, a lot to learn and i think the car is a lot more capable than the driver:))

Next up.... Japfest this weekend
