EK9 Type R
Decided to start a build thread :))

So I've had the ek9 for 2 months although it feels much longer. Never originally considered having an ek9, there were many, many other jap cars that crossed my mind but this one came up for a reasonable price from a friend who had looked after it well.. also came with a tonne of paperwork & some extra goodies!

Not entirely sure what prices for these gems are at the moment but I certainly thought the price was fair considering the work that needed to be done.

After a test drive & a few weeks of contemplating buying it, & seeing a couple at Japfest Donnington, the cash was handed over & here she is :D bringing me endless smiles! (As I'm sure most of you know all too well)

Not even 24 hours after picking it up I had it put on the rollers to see what the figures are.. she made a (slightly disheartening) 163.4hp.. but I'm guessing for a 20 year old car a little loss is to be expected.

I can't express how much a good service changed the feel of the car completely!! Working in the motor trade for a parts company also means I also get to feel smug comparing what I get parts for as opposed to retail :p

A decat was also fitted which made the car sound quieter in general but louder in vtec!?

So the pictures make the car look relatively tidy.. :( mechanically it runs sweet & the arches are solid.. not one bit of rust... the rest of the paintwork on the other hand.. not so good.. It was given a good clean, basically just alloy wheel cleaner chucked on it & left to soak the dirt out.. surprisingly made a huge difference!

Thankfully my fellas a painter by trade so we can sort the paint ourselves & without it costing an arm & a leg :D

(Could think of worse 'couples' cars.. ;) )

As soon as I can peel myself away from driving it & source panels/parts to restore her, we can get her back to her former glory! :D

Will get interior pictures soon & keep this updated when work starts :)

I see what you mean about the paintwork! looks like broken shards of glass lol not seen that before myself. Main thing is she runs and is mechanically sound :nice: disheartening on the dyno figures but is an old car, and every dyno is different so don't be put off too much. Probably get different figures elsewhere in different conditions. As you say a good service will do some good. Many engine mods done at all? should be able to squeeze more out of that I would've thought, being an ek9 they came with 180hp or so correct me if I'm wrong

Your correct to my knowledge @Pete180.. 180 is standard although the guys who put it on the dyno believe that honda only gave that figure as a rough guide.. they had also had a power steering fluid leak on the rollers earlier that day ha ha! the paintwork could be down to a number of reasons, water based paint baked too quickly or being exposed to sun (where it had been parked out of use for a while), poor prep? Etc.. I'm in no way trying to slate the painter though.. I'm just fortunate enough to be able to sort it. Engine is completely standard, has a dc2 manifold which is only thing mechanically I believe has been changed. Once the paintwork is done I'll look at figures.. I've thought about the turbo route but in all honesty I want to keep if as standard & original as possible. :)

Ah okay @Briana May well I guess it might read differently elsewhere! it doesn't smoke or burn fluids etc you say. Could do a compression test on it to see if it's reading low, or maybe that's just how it is! :) My brothers vti gave out 160hp so I would expect ek9 to be a bit more that's all. Could I ask what dyno you used? You local to west midlands by any chance.

Oooh ok! Yh it does look like the paints just cracked all over. It'll look awesome after that's sorted :nice: yh I'm thinking of turbo my em1 but for now I love the N/A sound

Wow that paint cracking is crazy. I thought it was some kind of weird wrap at first :wow:

A fresh coat of paint on the car will make it look so much fresher, I got mine done quite a few years ago and it made such a difference.

Shame about the power but to be fair the car only came with around 184 Bhp from factory so to only lose 1hp per year isn’t to bad. I’ve never had mine on a dunk but I am guessing it would probably be similar figures.

A remapped ecu might be able to extract more power if your wanting to up that a bit. Get some breathing mods and a re mapped ecu and it’ll prob make a decent bit more power.
