EK9 Spoon ECU or Programmable ECU with B16B basemap

Hey guys,

Probably a long shot but I'm either after a prefacelift Spoon ECU (seen the one on eBay - it's facelift and way too expensive for my liking considering it can't be remapped) or a programmable ECU mapped for a B16B. I'm not really after more power but I'd like to lower the VTEC crossover point a little bit and increase the rev limiter. The reason is that there are a couple corners at Knockhill where I hit limiter in 3rd for a second or two before I need to brake again. another 400 rpm rev range would help even though the car won't be making much power there.

Chipped P28 or P30 ecu with a B16b map on it should do the trick right. Easy enough to lower vtec and raise the redline. Swear I've seen some on the fb pages
 
Yeah that would be ideal TBH but nobody seems to have a B16B base map. There's a base map for just about everything else haha
 
@oifovo hello mate I've got a couple of ecus here but will require a b16b map if someone could do it for you, possibly Jesse, you shouldn't need b16b basemap for remapping though as plenty of us have had ours done without.
Also in most of my experience the spoon ecus are mainly for b18's so wouldn't have the right map either but there could be a b16b one.
As always with these ecus they are tailored to run with supporting mods that spoon had tuned the map for, not much info out there anymore.
I speak from experience that I have known people to mess up their engines with generic ecu's, remap is always the best option.
Another option is a vtec controller, I know not ideal but if you are competent enough you could adjust fueling etc.

Hey bud, there is a B16B specific Spoon ECU, I wouldn't use one designed for a different engine. From my research the Spoon ECU is pretty much the same as stock except for lowered VTEC engagement point and 9200rpm rev limiter - which is pretty much all I'm after. But the one on eBay is for 370 quid and it's a OBD2b so not plug and play. I don't mind spending that sort of money but I'd like the ECU to be re-mappable if I do. @jesse888 or @Vtec6000 might indeed have an idea of what would be the best thing to do?
 
For that sort of money you mentioned you could pick up a p28 ecu and get it custom mapped by someone like jesse etc to suit your mods. And the vtec engage/redline would be a basic thing they could include :nice: a tuner should be able to base map one up I'd have thought
 
spoon ecu was made for 100 octane gasoline which is available in japan.

The best option is always a custom tuned Ecu. I believe I done a back to back test of Spoon Ecu vs Custom tuned obd1 Ecu some time ago, can't remember if I posted in on here or not - will try locate it.

@Vtec6000 Interesting, I have spoon Ecu but I didn’t fit it, came from Japan like that so no idea if the car has any other mods to compliment it other than the spoon back box I know it has. Might have to swap over to one of these custom mapped ones if it’s going to make a big difference once other performance mods are added.
 
I absolutely agree that custom map will always be better than a generic map, being it Spoon or OEM. However I'm actually quite happy with the power the car is making and I don't feel it's modified enough to warrant a map. It's got a whale shlong intake (mainly because it was on the car when I bought it) and I have only just put a free flowing 2.5'' custom exhaust on it, that's it. Still rocking standard manifold. I'm very reluctant to open the engine because it is a healthy unopened B16B that doesn't smoke, and I'm worried I'll mess it up if I pull the head off etc... But having it mapped certainly is an option. Other than a manifold is there anything else that would be worthwhile doing before having it mapped? I've read K20 injectors work better than b series, not sure how much truth there is in that. Is there any point in fitting adjustable cam gears with standard cams?
 
I wouldn't bother opening up the engine if there's no real need (unless it's badly burning oil or smokey etc) and if you don't plan on doing internal mods, then best to leave it as is if it's healthy. For bolt ons, a good intake and exhaust manifold would be nice. My brothers stock b16a2 pulled good mid range power from breathing mods such as in/ex manifolds, decat, cold air feed as whale penises are good for sound but get heat soak.

Adjustable cam gears on standard cams are pointless really unless you have the extra cash to splash and want to squeeze every HP you can. Or if you plan to upgrade cams in the future?
 
The only reason I was thinking cam gears might be good is that I think they could allow for a little adjustment in terms of where the power band is. I am not after more power, I want a slightly wider power band up in the rev range. But I don't know enough about these things to say yes it will help or no it's a waste of time. The car has been built for track and I frankly don't care how little power it has below 5000 rpm, all I'm interested in is that it makes power between say 5500 and 9000. I'm going to get a 98 Spec 4-1 manifold as that should help to push the power band up a little as well.
 
I had a Spoon ECU on my DC2 (98 spec specific) for about a month before I took it off .
There doesn't seem to be enough definitive info out there on what exactly the Spoon ECU is set up for, just speculation .

Where it did lower the VTEC engagement point a few hundred rpm, it didn't actually do anything power wise. I could still feel the original pull of the engine at 5900rpm, prior to that it was all just noise and no extra go.
The rev limit of 9.2k seemed a little dodgy to me as well having it rev so high on a standard engine, something like 9.5k on the rev counter.:lol:

Be careful buying a second hand p28 ECU as well. I bought a H-tune refurbed one second hand and the pin for controlling the number 1 injector was faulty causing it to be open constantly. Wasted day at the Dyno. Lol
Will be buying one from H-tune themselves soon and then having a custom map by Jesse hopefully.
