I’m looking to rebuild/ refresh my standard gearbox with oem replacement parts and a 4.9 final drive.

Does anyone know where I should go about starting ?

What about the MFactory rebuild kits?

Also, any suggestions on a clutch and flywheel ? I Don’t really plan on doing Any major internal engine upgrades.

Any help welcome!

Cheers

I've got M-factory 1.9 FD and love it, but it wouldn't be my choice if your car is anything but weekend / track toy, the gearing is far too short for any motorway driving. Your options are either to get the full rebuild kit and swap bearings and syncros over or open the box first, measure the syncros and check all other components for wear and only order what you a actually need. Opening the box and rebuilding it is not as difficult as it may sound, I've done it twice now. As for flywheel I'd go with some lighter variety, plenty people use the aluminium Fidanza fly but I've had issues with it (the steel locating pins fell out), so I sold it and got a steel one instead, can't remember what brand. If you are not increasing power significantly then OEM Honda clutch is the way to go. One thing I'd suggest if your car is a low annual mileage track / weekend toy is a plated diff. I've got Cusco RS and it completely transformed the car, wouldn't want one without it now. Downsides are it's expensive, it wears out and will eventually need a rebuild and also is quite aggressive, especially initially before the gearbox warms up a bit. It also increases wear of other components namely driveshafts / CV joints. But as I said, I love mine.

Thanks for the good advice. More track toy\ weekender so not concerned about the 4.9
might be best to open it up first before buying anything in case all is good inside

Have a look at my thread (Ej9 shed) as Ive just done work on a gearbox.

The gears always look great - had a few in bits. The baulk rings wear and you can measure clearance. Its not hard to change them.

Occasionally you find a rough bearing but the pilot bearing in the flywheel seems more of an issue.

FD is one of rhe bigger jobs due to the level of disassebly. I am assuming you own a puller?

I've changed my FD, it's not difficult if you are methodical. As above, you'll need a puller (cheap enough to buy, I got a whole set off eBay) and the large nut at the top can apparently be difficult to get undone but it was super easy with an impact gun. Just take lots of photos and lay everything out in order and you'll be fine!

I won’t be doing it myself anyway. Wouldn’t have the confidence to attempt anything internal

Its no harder than removing the gearbox if you use the excellent Honda-tech guide and keep organised.
