Black Ek9
Picked up this Black few months back. Very original car but rusted beyond belief.
Anyone rescued one this bad?

Rust is in every seam bar the bulkhead ones

Lots of undersealer holding it all together

Sadly this is pretty normal for any EK that has been in the UK for a while and been driven in the winter. I have seen worse! There will be people who genuinely believe they have a mint car but would be in for a shock if they lifted the carpet.

Yeah going to get it dipped and primed to restore it properly I think
Rear type r bumper bar hanging on by a thread here at the moment. Car was undersealed and got some arch action and a bad respray but rotted away under the sealer. I'm in it for floors, sills and some patching in the boot above fuel tank and a jacking point that collapsed

It’s a shame it’s ended up in that shape, looks like a case of it was under sealed when it was too late and needed some attention rather than being covered up. Good job on persevering with it though, when was it imported out of interest?

Imported in 2009 according to the history but I was told it was lying up for a few years. Only 150kms on clocks and pretty sure its genuine from seat wear and bushings etc Whole car has a history of covering it up and worry about it later from what I've seen
Got the car with the worst Decat I've ever seen, a tec 7 job on the sump which I've sorted before stripping it.
Black ones are too rare to let it get scrapped and broken for parts so I'll sort it some how

Underseal is terrible if applied to a wet rusty underside as Kipper says.
The same as painting damp wood!

I had my EJ in a garage for a week with a dehumidifier before starting to treat the couple of rusty areas.

My somewhat rusty car has no rust whatsoever where you've shown - so dare I ask what its like around the rear sills underneath and inside the front arches (under the top of arch liners)?

As hinted above there is no "rust free" example unless its been kept in a climate controlled garage from new and only driven on dry summer days. They rot from the inside out and people only seem to care about the rear arches (which are mostly cosmetic!).

People also seem to avoid posting pictures of the rot - I guess in case it affects the future value of the car. I'd rather see the true state of it.

These pictures are of a red b18c4 converted EK3 for sale on FB at the moment. Its the worst I've seen but I'm sure there are many worse!
The photos were posted of a previous owner who sold it to break....

The first picture is where a torque mount should be!

Cant see them Pics yeah doubt theres any rust free examples unless they're the 80k ones from japan with 2ks on the clock haha

Yeah it's needs new door sills and lower inner arches both sides again just undersealed the arches and I found a heap of sand stuck in the top camber arms haha so it's been near the sea at some point in its life.

Sad to see though how had these can get when it's just ignored

Jesus atleast my box sections are okay-ish haha

Yeah I'll do a build post or something as it progresses. Cars nearly stripped now just need to get the type r windscreen out as carefully as I can

the windscreen isnt specific to the ek9, its the same as every other ek hatch and coupe.
only integra Type-Rx's had thinner glass (so honda say)

And if you are fully rebuilding it get a new one from honda :) makes the world of difference, had mine replaced earlier this year on insurance due to a crack with a new genuine item. not expensive either

Ah one the lads told me the ek9 got a lighter windscreen as well as losing all the sound deadening
How did they shed the rest of the weight then I wonder?

Isnt the ek9 windscreen bronze tint instead of the UK blue?

That ek3 is ridiculous. Is it this one on gumtree? If so the mileage goes backwards twice as well:clap:

No its a faint green tint, just like the UK glass is. no bronze glass at all on an EK9 (wasnt an option either)
Blue(and its very faint i'm told) came on USDM stuff IIRC

The windscreen claim has been made by many but isn't true, the part number is the same as every japanese EK from the EK2(1.3) to the ek9.
I did extensive research on it before finding my replacement windscreen. The lack of sound deadening is true. I've got all the original brochures for the EK9s across all years i'll dig them out and scan the bit about weight reduction and stiffening as it tells you everything :)

for reference:
On an EK9 you have
Windscreen - lighter green
Door Glass - darker Green
3 rear glass pieces - Privacy

On a race base it was lighter green windscreen and clear for the rest.

Ah right so did they change anything on the actual chassis to loose weight? cause they added bits to rear subframe for ARB to strengthen it etc and the type r brace obviously

Send on the brochures anyway I'd love to see them

yes and no. they added more weight by adding extra metal to strengthen areas and some places you dont have the same impact protection bars etc
Also Happy New Year :)

am i right in saying the only difference with a ek9 chassis compared to lower models is the stronger rear subframe and seam welded front subframe
