EK9 Racecar

For me its building something that shouldnt be that powerful and making it so but its as much the journey and the lessons you learn along the way.
For those that have been in a 350+hp ek civic theyll know they really arent slow lol

The first point is exactly how I see it. A very close friend of mine owns an MX-5 pushing out 300KW (at the wheel, through the 1.8L engine mind you) in a completely stripped out 900KG driverless car.

I've never driven it personally (and don't wish to), but as the passenger feeling boost come and the external gate open is all smiles for me, I can't stop laughing. Especially in a car known for hairdresser jokes, and not nearly as well known for being fast.

That MX-5 was basically my inspiration for the turbo in the first place, the fact that you don't see them often here in Australia let alone any serious civic build. But now that I've seen there's actually a huge following for this sort of thing it's made me less hesitant and I'm hoping I'll be able to share that experience here.

Pretty much how I was bud when I went out in Jesse's ek9 at 1bar! Makes you grin from cheek to cheek.
If you ever need any help or advice on a turbo build or anything Honda related, the members on this forum will be happy to help you :nice:

I'll no doubt be lurking and following this (and Jesse's) thread because I'll definitely need help!

I've done some preliminary research on turbo kits and stronger internals but there's way too much out there.

I'd be interested to know how comfortably I could run it on a stock block (with maybe lower comp pistons only) but I'd probably want to knock it over all at once to save needing to pay someone to pull the motor out again and drop the forged stuff down the track.

Let's get some front aerodynamics sorted!
Also got side skirts to go on, and a set of new tyres for my track wheels.

More pictures coming soon.
Lots to do on the car before the end of the month.

Where did you get the airdam style lip front mate?

Oil and filter change ready for next weekend, compression checked and valve clearances done.

Air filter relocated, as my previous design was too risky.

All ready to go! She's running sweet, fingers crossed for Saturday!!

Love that laptop charger mount lol

I too can't wait to see the finished thing Sam.....such a transformation since Jap Fest last year!!.....plus, in such superb detail!

So yesterday was tuning day :)) Jesse came down to me nice and early and we started preparing the car. It had been raining the night before so the roads were a little slippery!
Once the knock monitoring was set up and Jesse had worked his magic we started the road tune.
First we tuned some part throttle boost on low cam, really clever stuff especially when Jesse introduced more timing and vtec :alone:
After not too long though we noticed that the boost controller wasn't reading any manifold pressure, so we had quick a look but was unable to fix quickly yesterday so we couldn't tune over 0.5bar.
Also we noticed that my oil pressure gauge when warm wouldn't seem to pass 60psi, which is odd as it should hit pressure relief at 80psi. We did some looking into it and it is the correct oil pump. So I've got a few ideas of what it could be, just need to look into it.
This didn't stop us getting a really good tune at 0.5bar though.
@jesse888 has done a fantastic job! I would highly recommend giving him a chance tuning your car, he has excellent knowledge and is careful and doesn't take any risks.
I'm afraid I didn't get any pictures really!
A couple of videos that I'll try to share that my friend Doug took. :drive:

So yeh overall though I'm very very happy! The engine is still intact, making power! And sounds amazing! I'm proud of myself that my first engine build has passed the first hurdle, now just need to fix these small niggles and we'll be back for tuning at higher boost :nice:
