DIY: B series rocker cover painting

cool, aluminium doesnt rust tho dude
it does. That`s what the white and greish areas are. Only it doesn`t corode that easy as iron or steel.
bare aluminum will oxyde and get nasty, some clear coat will help
to keep it nice.
correct. or some primer.
does it matter when putting the cover back on that u need to have it at the rite torque or something??
Not really. just make sure not to over tighten the nuts.

Credit to you dude ;)

p.s Lovng the JDM Teg wheels :p
Thanks!

Excellent write up and love the step by step guide

was going to tackle this on this weekend-now have clear process-thank you very much

Was just about to do this myself and seen this thread.

Will I need to replace the head gasket when i take the cover off? Or can the current one just be used again?

Its the cam cover gasket, providing its in one piece and looks in good condition, you can re use it.

Great write up, made me want to do mine now!!

Revival of an old thread again xD.

Do you clean the underside of the rocker cover? If so what with because if you use the paint thinner does it not leak down in the gaps where the spark plug cover.goes and oil hole.

Also while this is off the car did you just leave the bonnet down on your car?

How long do you have to wait before you can put the rocker cover back on?

1) Eh ? The underside of the valve cover is left well alone whilst doing this, no need to clean this on a well maintained car.

2) Just cover it over with a towel if you have a garage, if not put your bonnet down with a towel over the rocker assembly anyway.

3) Depend on the finish you want, what paint you use, how many coats, whether you're using a clear coat etc etc. In any case its always good to leave your paint cure for 24hours at least, again if you're not too bothered about finish just leave it for a few hours until touch dry and be careful not to leave a shed load of finger prints/marks in the soft paint when putting it back onto your engine.

Thank you sir. thanks guys! If someone gives this a shot, post the results!

nice write up, should help alot of people wanting to freshen up their cover

here's my first attempt at a airbrushed rocker cover, it still needs some details finished off but cant wait to get it clearcoated and back on the car!!

cant decide if i should leave the letters and "H" as they are or sand them down to show the shiny alloy look?!?!?! decisions!

Wish mines was as easy as your step by step guide looked :( unfortunely previous owner had put enamel paint or plastic dip coating on, which 3 generous coats of paint remover over 5 hours barely stripped 5 % of the cam cover :( so it was the hard way.. took me all day. I'll get up before, during & after pics of it.. as it turned out no bad :)

That is awesome man. I think you should sand the letters down so they are nice and shiny, they would stand out really well I think.

How long did it take you to do?

Reckon you should defo polish te writting and emblems down mate! Looks mega regardless though.

Most recent one i did for "ShaunEK9" on here:

Only way i differed from the guide=
-didnt use any primer
- didnt cook the rocker, let it dry naturaly as i think baking it makes it stay an orangey colour it is when its wet, also dodnt wrinkle too much.

cheers, yeah true it would stand out better, guess il get the sandpaper out :nerv:

from getting the rocker off to where it is now its taken like 7 hours but alot of that is the paint stripping and cleaning, prep work is always the most annoying bit

never used wrinkle paint but thats a fair color change in the 2 pictures

that last pic looks spot on!

I don't use primer either when doing crinkle red.

Only way I found to get the wrinkle to stand out was spraying the paint quite thick then putting back under the grill until it dried.

anyone know hows best to take the paint off your letters and "H" ??

its taken me nearly 2 hours just to get the "HONDA" and the "H" back to the alloy look, there has to be a easier way without damaging the surrounding paint?

ive used sandpaper and a scalpel and tried my dremel tool but every bit ive got will cut into the alloy like butter :nerv:

I used a fibreglass pen to take the last of the paint off and a stanley blade to get the most off.

wear rubber gloves though as the fibreglass can stick in your hand and you can't see it

cheers, i managed to find a very easy way of doing it after refusing to carry on lol. A £3 scalpel set and one of the blades looked like a flat edge paint scraper but small and razor sharp. You could just push the paint off and it left a perfect edge between the new alloy look and the colors

Have you got pics of the finished article?

its still not finished lol, my cars off the road so been doing alot of different bits to it or i would of had the cover finished by now. It still needs clearcoat and to polish up the letters but heres a few shots..

:)
