Hello guys, I cannot deal with this dead 1.4 so wanting a bit of vtec :) planning getting a rotted ek3 and just taking the engine out and dropping it in my ej9 :), I know I could use the same drive shafts and gearbox etc... But I'm wanting to know what will I all need? Could I just put engine in and change ECUs over and VTEC would be running? Or do I have to wire it up somehow. Any body with a link to a full guide will be helpful thanks :)

if its the vtec-e engine don't be surprised if it doesn't take you a lot faster.. A 1st stage d14a4 is faster than the vtec e 114hp version. Then you have to deal with the long gearbox bla bla bla. It is worth getting the 130hp d15b version or any d16z6/y8

The reason why a D14a4 can easily be faster is mainly the gearbox. Put a D-series gearbox from a D16z6 in there with a D15Z6 andthe D14a4 will have a much harder time

Topicstarter, don't forget that the D15Z6 is a VTEC-E which means Economy. It's actually quite a cool engine as you combine extreme economy with a not too shabby 115hp. If you pair it with a short geared tranny you will enjoy a pretty quick car while still having good economy. D15B is a VTEC-E with an extra VTEC stage for extra performance. It actually has 3 stages instead of the 2 of regular VTEC engines. It's worth it to get a D15B instead of a D15Z6. If you do get a D15Z6 geet a shorter gearbox, for example from a D16Z6 or D14A4.

d15 DOES NOT have the same kind of VTEC as B series engines, it's a waste of time. You'd need the whole loom and ECU at the very least. The VTEC-E is there for economy, not speed, it "kicks in" (not that you could feel it in any way) at no more than 3500 rpm. All it does is it opens all 4 valves fully instead of 3 fully and 1 partially (which is what happens when the car is off VTEC). This allows for lean burn and better fuel efficiency.

Also, tuning the vtec-e engine is much more complicated than tuning a d14 or d16 engine due to its ecu.

Any not to mension that it won't make any real different.
Just save some money. Wait a year or so. And buy a car that's already quicker. Which the money you will "waste" doing all this you could easily spend that on a already quick car.
For example I had a d14 EJ. Had it for two years. Did a few things but nothing major. While owning that I saved money and in two years enough to buy a clio 182 which is a very quick car. Much quicker than a d15 civic would ever be. With in reason.

I have an ek3 mate with only 60k on clocks so healthy engine new clutch
Spoon n1 rep and there is hardly any difference between ej9 save your money
Buy an ek4 or if you want to do conversion b18c or k20 ;)

Right just been offerd a JDM D16 out of a dc1, what will I all need for my swap??
