Clicking Noise when taking off

I'm going to put this in Transmission section as I'm not 100 percent sure where to put it at the moment,I've done a quich search too and nothing has shown up.

I'm getting a very annoying clicking noise when taking off, most noticably in 1st and 2nd,and not all the time.

I thought it was the bottom mounting on the gearbox,it was ripped so I was nearly certain it was that,I replaced it,and its still the same!I'm thinking its a mounting but I cant get play in any of them on the ramp and there's no sign of wear.

The only other thing I have to ask is,on that bottom mounting at the front of the gearbox, the sleeve is much bigger than the threaded metal part that goes through it(the sleeve on the mounting sits over it,then a washer shaped the same as the threaded part goes on and then the nut),am I missing a sleeve for inbetween these parts,as it looks like the only thing stopping the threaded part moving about is the pressuse on that washer,is this right?

Yeah mine does this. I have a clutch/gear type diff. It clunks alot and jerks the car a bit under low throttle and low speed especially when turning.

And even if it is the clutch type LSD, you should be using a gearbox oil that has special additives, which makes it slip a bit, so it wouldn't clunk and jerk. Or that's what I've been told. I have one myself too, so please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That's what I heard as well to account for the banging on my brother's ek9.

mine used to do this clicking, then the clutch went, its fine now since i fitted my new clutch...

Mine does too! drives me potty.

I've got a standard LSD, is is still normal? (ive done a few searches for LSD information, from what i've read by others on this forum - it will outlive the car, requires no maintenance (other than gearbox oil change) and very very seldom get problems - is this true?)

Also Duncan said my car might have an uprated clutch when I bought it (as it was the only thing that felt different to him). Could an uprated clutch + standard flywheel generate this clicking noise?

(Please say yes, then you give me a perfect excuse to get a lightweight flywheel :) :D )

Excellent stuff,thanks for the replies!

I've been only hearing it since I took the 5zigen system off,so it must always have been there and I just didnt hear it!

Very annoying though!

That's the LSD johnny nothing to worry about:nice:
sorry to bring this up but i think its better to stick wif existing topic

i got myself an EK4 wif S4C LSD gearbox
my mechanic told me its a helical type so i assume its from the EK9?

but since the first day i drive it
it got loud knocking noise (dak dak dak dak dak) when i turning in small radius wif 1st/2nd gear, eg U-turn.
or when i'm driving in 2nd gear low speed under slight corner, if i press the clutch and shift to 3rd gear it will come out one loud "dak" as well.
and this sound is louder especially when the car still "cold" (morning start)
fren sitting my car just tot there will be something drop off from my car :(

is this normal for this lsd?
i'm using transmission oil state for LSD gearbox

Its normal enough for them to clunk when taking off turning. If its very severe then perhaps a uprated 1.5way diff has been fitted. First thing I would do is drain what ever gearbox oil you have in there and put Honda MTF oil in it. I find this the best suited gearbox oil for honda's and I think this would be the opinion of most:nice:

thx for ur advice bro..
i'm not very sure wat oil in it now but shud be synthetic lsd oil
been read thru most of the topic here found out u guys using MTF3
but i'm wondering is transmission oil choice varies for diff country with diff weather?
i'm in malaysia, and here we only got honda MTF it doenst state 2 or 3..

Happy to help. I really have no idea about grading of gearbox oil for different climates. I would imagine the MTF you provoided the link to, is fine to use. Another alternative would be landrover gearbox oil apparently its the same stuff as Honda MTF 1.

I've read a few threads like this after recently noticing i've felt a similar 'knocking' sound when my engine comes under/ off of load when slow manoeuvring e.g. in a multi storey car park, or sometimes when depressing the clutch between shifting around town. Could this be fatigued engine mounts? and how should I go about investigating where the noise is coming from?

The fact its on full lock when slow sounds like a CV joint is gone, they may have gotten damaged when the gearbox was replaced!

Are the CV gaitors ripped?

Maybe get a friend to listen outside to check with side it is coming from

I too get a slight "click" during off/on throttle transtions especially audible at lower speeds. it's definitely there too when doing the same at higher speeds. any ideas guys?

seems like a common problem / driver paranoia lol, any sugestions? :please:

I think its been agreed its the LSD in the box, very annoying though,if I hadnt have read it here I'd be changing mountings and everything!
