I just tried to upgrade my computers fan/heatsink since its been running hot (68-78 C at idle on both cores and 51-65c on the main board at idle), i could not for the life of me remove the OEM Heatsink, i saw 4 screws and a lever, i removed all but the damn thing would not come off, instead i just cleaned all the dust out of the heatsink and now temps are around 33-36c on the cores and 26-34 on the board but i still have this nice heatsink/fan i bougth that i'd like to install.

Any help is appreciated!!

This is on a AMD Socket AM2 5600+

I have the first kind of heatsink shown, the clip only type. I guess i will try again and twist, i was just pulling up with no luck :(

so you dont have to remove the screws to remove it,just unclip

it'll help if you get it nice and warm before trying to remove, that'll soften up the thermal compound.

Ive got the a similar AM2 cpu and it is more or less a unclip/ clip job. i tend to use a non magnetised screwdriver to pop off one side of the clips cuz they can be very difficult at times, hope this is of some help.

on a side note, it helps alot if you remove ram and possible even the power supply to give yourself a good view and whats going on

Problem is the heatsink is stuck on there pretty good, i will try again sometime, as for now i already reduced idle temps by over 45C by just cleaning up all the build up on the stock heatsink so i may just leave it as is for now...

nope, i didn't try a second time, temps dropped so much after i cleaned the dust out that I'm just going to leave it as is. Maybe i will put it on if i ever decide to overclock :nice:

Dust'll do it. Don'tcha remember when I was talking about mine running hotter than balls but then some canned air reduced the temps by 20+ degrees?

BTW, don't try to overclock. You don't have any hardware intended to do that and with the limitations your hardware presents, you won't make any gains worth noting.

yeah i got 70 degree f temp drop on the main board and both cores!! Your right about the overclocking, the 5600+ is a poor over clocker, i have seen some people take it up to 3.0 but thats about it...

Well, not just your CPU, it's your motherboard that's the biggest limitation. Due to it's limits, if you can even overclock it, it won't be by much.
