Hi all,
For the past 9 months I have been restoring and upgrading my Euro EK4. It has the B16b engine and S4C gearbox.
Undercarriage all surface rust has been removed and put into 2K coating. All fuel and brake lines have been replaced as well.
Suspension has been upgraded to Hardrace. Car handles very well, very well indeed. Fun!
Enginewise all maintenance is done, engine is stock except for intake, header, exhaust.
Engine makes 202hp/ 169whp / 166whp very linear curve @ 13 AFR. Pulls hard up to 8800 rpm.
Now, very recently I have a rough running, engine feels like it is running on 3 cylinders and if you gently apply throttle you can feel the vibration.
Vibration is also feelable on the valve cover. Above 2000 rpm engine runs very smooth.
I noticed during the recent dyno session a lot of smoke (white) coming from the exhaust during a dyno pull and releasing the throtlle (not on WOT). So valve stem(s) are shot and I will replace them in december.
I have been with Honda since 1999 and out of it for a decade or so but bought this car a year ago. I know this stuff is getting old and I take great care of the car and engine no matter the costs to keep it (as much) 100%.
This one is puzzling me, to me it seems a leaky valve stem seal can't produce such a problem. Maybe it is totally worn/kaput? Dripping a bit of oil on one of the cylinders?
Things I checked so far:
Engine
Compression test : exactly 13 bar on all four cylinders.
Injectors
I check if one injector is not working by pulling injector plugs one by one. Obvious all injectors work fine.
I removed the injectors and check visually, they are clean, checked injector o-rings. Rubber is supple. After reassembly of the injectors I sprayed with brake cleaner at the bottom of the injector with the engine running, no change in RPM. So also OK
Sprayed with injector cleaner at all possible vacuum leak locations : all OK
I did find the coolant overflow tank to be leaking at the cap by blowing on the hose, will replace tomorrow with original one. Visual inspection of radiator cap, 100% perfect.
Electrical
Replaced distributor with my spare one and there is no change in engine behavior.
I sprayed all electrical components under the hood with water while engine was runnong, no change in RPM or misfiring so all OK.
