i want to do a engine conversion on my EJ9 and can not decide to do a B16A2 OR B18C6 (DC2 Engine), so was wondering from people on here some things that would help me make my mind up. i was originally wanting to do a b16 turbo but went of the idea knowing that it will drink soo much fuel and obviously become less reliable with more things to go wrong.

I have been thinking do a b18c6 conversion but will be expensive, if i was to do it i would only modify the engine by basics like buddy club exhaust, 4-2-1 manifold, induction kit and maybe cams as i would be using it for my every day car soo need fuel economy to stay reasonable, so i was wondering if any one knows much MPG u get out of a slightly modified b18c6 ? and if it worth spending all the extra money on a b18c6 engine over a B16A2 ? also how much bhp are u looking at for a slightly modified B16A2 engine with uddy club exhaust, 4-2-1 manifold, induction kit and cams ??

basically i need opinions on if its worth spending the extra money on a b18c6 when ur going to keep it almost standard for your daily runner or just do a slightly modified B16A2 for a daily runner ??

Any information that will help me make my mind up will be a big help cheers

You seem to mention fuel economy and cost quite often.
B16a2 and bolt ons would suit your needs.

What sort of budget are you working with?

What is the price difference between the 1600 and 1800?

you could go for a compromise and get a B18C4 (MB6 / DC2 SiR). Not as powerful or revy as a B18C / B18C6 but they go for hell of a lot cheaper. Would try and mate it to an S4C or similar though - the MB6 gearing is a bit long so it's not great for acceleration.

B16A2 as I cant justify how much B18C6's go for

And 160bhp straight out of a 1.6 is pretty dang good.

cheers for all the info... i was looking at spending about 3.5k pounds max but less would be good obviously, i just want a nice amount of power.... but not having to go to the petrol station every couple of miles. my mate with his Nissan skyline R33 GTR Vspec spends a ridiculous amount of money on fuel i know mine will be no where near the same power as that but needs to be at the least 20mpg

3500 would get you a b18c swap

Its a world apart from a b16

mine is pretty good on juice, ive got 330 out of a tank

If you have the money for the B18 then go for it.

Agreed - I'd say my B18C swap was some of the best money I've ever spent for the fun I've had from it. If you get a UK engine it's definitely worthwhile getting a jdm manifold and since you'll have to get a jdm ecu anyway try and get a 98spec (higher revs and more power). Don't waste your money on an induction kit, EK4/9 or DC2 airbox is plenty good enough.

On long motorway runs I can probably get 30-35mpg in mine. Around town etc it's a bit tragic but not really much worse than a B16A2.

aahh okay yea thats basically what i wanted to know is it worth spending the extra money for the b18c6.... looks like thats what ill be getting then with some small modifications to it
cheers (Y)

Without a doubt it's worth spending the extra money in my eyes, I went from a B16a2 in my EM1 to a JDM B18CR and the difference in performance is staggering. The VTEC change over with the B18 is far more aggressive and the extra torque means you can pootle about in 4th around town. In general I find I spend a lot more time in the middle of the rev range than I did with the b16a2. Don't get me wrong the b16a2 is a brilliant engine and lots of fun but it really isn't in the same league as the B18c. As far as mpg is concerned I used to get an average of 280 miles to a tank of mixed driving with the b16 and currently getting an average of 260 with the b18 and that's with a fair amount of VTEC use. Don't forget to budget in upgrading at the least your front brakes too! My budget was less than 3k too so with 3.5k I'd definitely say go for it!

originally wanting to do a b16 turbo but went of the idea knowing that it will drink soo much fuel

it maybe just me but who does a more powerfull engine swap and worries about fuel economy????

b18c6 or b16a2

good question? a b16a2 is much cheaper than an b18c6 although the b18 may have that extra power the B16a2 has so much more going for it and there isnt a single part you cant buy for it.

in my eyes the b16a2 was made for a civic and the b18c6 was made for the teg

there are loads of parts available for both models, but what is your budget? you could build a very reliable b20 for for £3k and be faster than both.

just a thought lol:D

Stick with what you have until you know what you want. You need to set your goal then we can help you get there, if you need any help that is.

hmm ive heard turbo is actually quite good on fuel if you get it mapped properly and not have a heavy right foot.

I'm on the same thing my friend so I'll tell you my thoughts about it. As we talk about B18c6 we talk about 1.8lt so it's sure to be more expensive after the installation. Of course we talk about the best engine to buy for ek but the installation will be harder than the b16 as it is from another car and it's bigger. Also it's heavier than the b16a2 so travel costs go way up. The b16a2 is more cheaper, easier and better for everyday use and on top of that if you wan't you can use the money left to put some really sweet stuff on your b16. An other option is as a fellow mentioned, turbo. I don't like turbo on Vtec BUT it's the best engine for turbo. As you can see I'm more to b16 but I am going for b16b. And I will agree with the other folks, you mention too much the cost so the b16a2 is the best solution for you. I'll wait for your conclusions and I suppose your built thread. Good luck mate!

I've heard the same. Was speaking to Will of RDT and he said he can get 32mpg out of his monster if he drives it sensibly.
