Yo!
As many of yous will know I f**ked my b16a2 engine not long ago, managed to get a replacement but it seems the head on my old one is fine. I was planning on doing some upgrades to my original head whilst its off then swap it back over onto the replacement engine. At least that way I can take my time because I will have the full replacement engine and head in the car
Firstly going to ask if its worth while and what I could do?

I've already got ek9 cams. I was thinking 9 or teg valves, spring, retainers, slight skim on the head and get a good quality thin gasket. Am I along the right lines here at all?

Cheers

Sounds good mate. I would get some headwork done also, port/polish etc and try and get some higher compression pistons in there before you put it all back together.
Also, I would just use an oem head gasket, as I've heard of horror stories with some aftermarket ones. I'm sure someone else with more experience will chime in and help also though

do everything you said but make sure get new valve stems , wouldnt bother port and polish as no good unless running a turbo , super charger or big horse power , around 300 figure so waste of money , could invest that on a new intake mani skunk 2 or something

Wrong.

A proper ported head will make a difference regardless of boost/high power or not.

Get the clearances checked on your valve guides. A lot of B series smoke because of worn guides.

Done this to my B16A2 head recently :

New valve stems , and bored TB to 62mm with venturi ( spoon like).

ive read porting and polishing makes a big difference to bseries engines but have no experience with it

am i right in saying the b16b was hand ported and polished?? what about the b16a??

Type r head port is very basic, just a clean up under the valve seat area if I remember correct

There's an article on the endyn website (
http://www.theoldone.com/default.asp )about basic home porting on b series,

Just going in there and grinding away changing shapes and radiuses is a big no!

I have a Type R head sitting here, complete with lma's, 8 inlet 6 exhaust valves and springs.
Just crying out for your cams and 2 valves then you got yourself a full EK9 R head.
Dunx

As said. Diving in, taking out material and changing radiuses Is a big nono :nono:

Have dabbled a bit myself with porting. But always just smoothen out the rough edges.

Have a spare old A1 head hear I practice on. Plan to stick it on an engine at some point just to see what happens.

Thanks for the input guys, still unsure of what I will do! Main thing is to get the car back on the road!
Dunk I have PM'd you :nice:

Excellent advice. I didn't do it on my own head and even with new valve stem seals and new piston rings it still smokes a bit and consumes oil ... Planing to change the complete head for a rebuilt + p&p one.

+1

Use an OEM Headgasket.
