Civic ek4 97'
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and currently own a 97 civic ek4. The engine was very quiet at the beginning, but now it seems to have gotten louder especially at idle. The revs are still the same though. I dont know if this engine normally has this sound or am i just imagining something? It kind of sounds like my new diesel bmw :). It never consumed any oil and it still doesn't, the compression is good, vtec kicks hard... And yes, i will paint the engine cover, i just finished the car...cover is the next part.
Here is a video of it idling:

Maybe needs valve clearance adjustment. Whats the mileage?

@gwailo
It's got 150 000 miles, but was rebuilt about 20k miles ago (new pistons, seals, the lot...). I was thinking about the adjustment but i don't know if that's the case. It didn't become louder over time but quite quick, like in 2 days. Still isn't hella loud, some friends tell me that this engine should sound like it's sounding now and that the b series is clicky overall. I'm mostly asking because i'm new to the honda game. I've had bmws all my life and most of them ran really silent and with no vibrations. I could put a coin on the engine an it wouldn't flip over. Maybe it's just the nature of this engine. It was sitting for quite some time after the rebuild, driven mostly 1x per month. I know it's hard to determine something over a video. I guess i could try to get my valve clearances adjusted. It can't hurt. Although i don't know why that can be the case after 20k miles

Is it only when cold or after it has warmed up as well? I can’t hear anything that would concern me in the video.

Only when it's cold, or been siting idle for longer than 30 min. I was looking today closely and i think the injectors are clicking. I bought new ones when the rebuild was done. Obviously they were quiet before, never suspected the injectors. And there's a friend who tells me it's normal that they click like that. Well i got no problems. If they want to click like that they can go on. There is some clicking from the head aswell but nothing major. Did the valve adjustment, fixed nothing :( . Thanks for the help. I think i understand now that this is quite normal for this engine. But if i would hear such sounds from my new car i would be concerned.

its a good idead to check the whole exhaust , from headers till the end u never know, i had a small hole and it created some noise and i had some fumes inside , so take a look , its free
