96 spec or 98 spec gear ratio

Like which has a be better gear ratios for street racing, drag or on the track. With both being in the same hp range.

the first 3 gears of the 98 spec is close, while 4th and 5th gears are the same as the 96 spec. this really depends on the track as to which is better.

I own a 98 spec and a EK9 which has the same gear ratios as the 96 spec. I must say that driving the 98 spec DC2 is quite tiring in the city and even medium speed roads, while the 4.4 final gear of the EK9 and 96 spec DC2 is more relaxed. In Tsukuba for example, I has glad to have the closer first three gears because I could make better use of the power band especially in the 1st and 2nd hairpins. On the Dunlop corner I could maintain 3rd gear and let off and don`t lose too much revs getting back on the throttle in 3rd gear.

So it really depends what stage you are planning to use it for.

What car and what set up do you have?

The '96 and '98 share the same 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear ratio. The '98 uses the GSR 4th and 5th gear longer ratios.

The '96 uses a 4.4 ratio final drive, whilst the '98 uses a 4.785 ratio final drive.

Because of this, the '98 spec transmission is shorter through 1st/2nd/3rd. Because of the longer 4th/5th though, it evens itself back out again. This was intentional.

So if i use my S4C (ek9) gearbox on a B18c it will be just like a 96 spec gearbox? orr?

I'm too tired so all i will say is this: *facepalm*

I just wanted opinions and thank you to those who contributed, but if you thought that was an stupid question I don't see the stupidity from asking something as such on a forums based on the topic.

Another reason why I wanted to know is because am ordering a car sometime this year and had a problem deciding whether to get an ek9 or a dc2. I eventually decided to go with the dc2. Now deciding whether to pick either a 96 spec or a 98spec. Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

When people take the time to make stickies and type up wright ups and articles on the topic, when you could have had your answer with just a few clicks and simple reading for maybe 5 minutes... It just gets tiring to answer, have read the stickies in the transmission section?

It's not a stupid question, just the answer is so readily available, and this topic has been beaten to death.

Well that's very understandable, but no I haven't seen that thread thank you for bringing it my attention. An simple post with an link directing me to that thread in your second post would have been very helpful remember I am a noobie here:p, I don't mind the reading at all. I do agree that i could have put more effort into searching the forums. Thanks for the useless information Sir. Also sorry that we got off with a bad express you seem like a veteran on this forum and very experiences when it comes to engines/cars.

All good, i would have helped if nobody else did, i was just really tired :)
