Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how difficult it would be to change my final drive DIY?

I am reasonably mechancially minded but never had a gearbox apart before so just curious. If I was to get someone to fit it for peace of mind how much would I be looking at? Would it be worth having the syncros redone while its away (currently it works really well and doesnt crunch into gear at any rpm) but would you guys reccomend having them done anyway will its apart?

Thanks in advance :)

To strip and rebuild is fairly straight forward, as long as your organization skills are good haha.
Some one else que in here, but I believe you may need to re-size the shims in your trans when changing components. Proper spacing is critical.

To be fair after speaking to a local gearbox specialist he didn't seem to think it would be too much labour wise to get it changed out and he would take a view on the syncros once its in pieces.

Thanks for the replies, I'd like to have a go myself but I think for what I have been quoted and for the piece of mind its probably a safer bet to give it to a pro lol

As you guys say its a systematic process and sods law I'd get distracted during the dismantle and forget where it all goes!

It's really not that difficult, I've managed to do it having zero previous experience with gearboxes. I got plenty heavy duty plastic bags and placed each part in a separate bag as it came off, numbering them. Also took a lot of pictures which I'd lost by the time I was putting it back together lol. There's a very good how to on Honda Tech. I prefer learning how to do things rather than handing cash over and letting others do it, mainly because some of my past experiences taught me that I can actually do better than some "professionals"

would it be easier to buy the 4.7 itr gear box and change 4thand 5th gear or buy a 4.4 ctr gearbox and change to the 4.7 final drive?
