What's everyone using to record track footage?

I was going to buy a GoPro because that's what everybody else does, but they're a bit pricey (I know you get what you pay for).

Anyone had any luck with cheaper alternatives that record just as well? Good quality footage is an absolute must, a well known brand would be nice but not entirely mandatory if it gets the job done just as well.

If you use something other than a gopro (or even a gopro) if you have a video or two for me to gauge quality that'd be great - preferably of actual track footage since that'll be the main duty. I know there are tons of clips of people at the track in various parts of the forum but I'm more interested in knowing what people are using.

Gopro are obviously good but imho don't waste your money....i use an SJ4000 off ebay, just like a gopro and the basic onesccome with a screen, all the mounts etc you would ever need, its waterproof as ive taken it on hols doing underwater shooting vid.
I mainly use mine for motorcycle trackdays and got superb footage and sound.....amazing for the money.

Mine is a 1080p version, but i see they have 4k now, go for a seller with high f/back, sales etc and you wont be disappointed
I think there is even a youtube comparison vid for gopro v SJ4000!

Goodluck :nice:

Thanks man, really appreciate it. I do want a gopro but I don't want to pay the gopro tax haha

I'll look into the SJ4000. As long as it's fairly reputable I will be happy with it.

When i got mine, they were selling on Amazon too, probably still are.....all the reviews were pretty much outstanding.....so no brainer when they only cost about 30 or 40 quid! The new 4k version cost more i think...
So cheap ive been meaning to get another for a rear facing shot along with the one ive already got on the front :nice:

Hi mate, I run a gopro as I also use it for my dirtbike, really good quality and as you've already said, you get what you pay for. I have a bar in between the seat belt anchor points and the camera mounted in the middle.....

Quality is really good and i feel like you just cant go wrong with one. So expensive though :(

Well mine is a hero 2, which around 6 years old now, had some right hammer, still works fine and still on the original battery! I know they're expensive but I always think, how many cheaper ones would I have fine through by now? There are some very good cheaper alternatives out there now though!

You can buy a used but good quality hero 3+ black with all the attachments you'll need on eBay for less than £200 I reckon. They record in 4K too. My GoPro hero 3 was ran over by a lorry doing 60mph, It had its case on which saved it but it's still completely chewed up, front screen is no more, the beeping sound no longer works and it still records as it did when new so that shows you the build quality.

Cheap recorders can get 'wavy' recordings at higher speeds- It does something to them. A friend bought a cheaper Radio Shack video HD recorder. Running down the strip, at about 50MPH the video was trash. Buy a quality one so you only have to buy it once is my advice.

That's incredible! Lorrys aren't light

Thanks guys, I think I'll just end up forking out for a gopro. Sorta reluctant but can't go past the quality.

I'll do some last minute looking for a cheaper alternative and if I can't find something I'm convinced about I'll go with the gopro

SJ4000 records completely fine at 140mph+
Its so good I run mine at 720 for extended video time...
Can i just point out that there is no magic beans or UFO technology in a Gopro....
Sorry Gopro fanboys, its the truth.

Do check out the comparisons on youtube before you part with all that cash....

I know there's no magic beans lol, as I said I use mine on my dirtbike so I bought a gopro for its durability not only it's video quality. It's had some big hits too haha!

Had my hero2 since it first came out. I wish it would break tbh so i can get a new fancy one with bluetooth and all that jazz
