Hi All

Anyone have any idea what the differences are being the original SW388s and the ReReleases are ?

Just interested more than anything.

New ones are heavier, forged in Japan instead of Russia. Not made by Desmond like originals.
Slightly different look (lips and edges of spokes) and the specs (width and ET) they come in are different

OG all day long, here’s mine

Who makes the new version? I assume someone like RAYS, Watanabe, WORK etc

If often seems no tyre fitters know the yellow coloured spots on the tyres are the lightest bit and should line up with the valve? (unless there is a spot on the wheel for the red high point).

One of the above has a yellow near a valve.Does the red also line up with spot or is it just chance?

I found this

In 1994, the aim was the world's lightest aluminum wheels, developed jointly with Desmond Corporation, it took two years to achieve the weight of 3.88kg. The SW388 was introduced in 1996 but production ended in 1999 with the closing of the Russian forging factory. The SW388 has been an iconic symbol of Spoon with Honda fans all over the world demanding it's re-release. After careful study the wheels are machine forged by Tan-Ei-Sya in Toyama prefecture Japan. As with the original, the finish is anodized aluminum black which is lighter and stronger than paint.

Interesting. I did a bit of a google and it mentions they supply Enkei's forged wheels, F1 wheels, OEM and Super GT. So in short, they know what they are doing and aren't a mickey mouse outfit.

The new ones are also 4.3kg for a 15x7 which I expect is because the originals seem to crack easily if abused. Shame to go over that 4kg mark though! SW430s!

Still insanely light.
