Hi. I have a B16B engine in my 2000 Honda Civic si. I bought it from a guy near my area 3 months ago due to a guy hitting my Mitsubushi Lancer. Recently, I almost ran out of oil the other day and notices my engine is making some kind of noise from the head. Apparently it's called "Engine Knocking". I was wondering if any of y'all know what to do or how you fix the problem.

Thank you!

Post up a video so people can really give proper opinions :please:

You say it's from the head, is it like a tapping sound (could be LMAs?) or a full on loud knocking sound? My b16 started knocking bottom end due to a crank bearing and it's a horrible sound - see my thread and video I posted up.

Try filming the sound and upload the video to youtube then here like I did so we can see what you mean :)

I wouldn't start it again accept to video it. If you've span a bearing you'll do a lot of damage to expensive parts.
Sometimes a span bearing can't be heard until the engine starts to warm the oil up, then it's a real distinctive noise.
Post a clear video of the sound with afew blips of the throttle and I should be able to tell you.
You saying you ran low/out of oil is a good sign you've damaged the bottom end of the engine already.

Here you go!

This may or may now help but I'm trying while I can. I don't know much about engines and fairly new to hondas.

From that video I'd say you have span a conrod bearing buddy.
Didn't sound tooooo bad until you got in the car and blipped the throttle abit harder.
If you hope to try and save the crankshaft I'd not start it again unless your showing someone experienced in person just to confirm what I think.

Unfortunately this means your going to either need a new bottom end or if the crank isn't too badly scorn you could have that reconditioned(we call it ground in the uk) and then rebuild the bottom end you've got.

Just watched it again.
Considering its on a cold start aswell I'm 95% that's a span bearing.

I have done two engines in this way. A hard corner and oil starvation.

I would definately look to investigate. Probably possible with engine in car if you pull tbe exhaust, gearbox bracket, sump, oil pickup, brace.

Depending how long it's been ran like that you may end up finding large flakes of bearing in the sump and in the oil pick up mesh.

Another way to check quickly is drain the oil through a fine gauze or filter paper, any metal will be easily seen on the filter. Also I have a complete b16b bottom end for sale if you need it...

Here's my video buddy, we're twins! :( lol drain the oil out, if like me then you'll see plenty of metal crap on your magnetic sump plug (if you have one) or you'll just see how grey the oil is. As above I believe it's spun a bearing like me.

How much for the bottom end. Just wondering because I may just doing that if it is all jacked up.

Think you will need head hottanked and chemically cleaned also as there might be bits of metal in your oil gallerys ,but I'd pull the sump of and check oil to see if there is lots of metal in there ,put filter oil though a old rag and cut oil filter to inspect for metal ,

as above, clean the head thoroughly.
Plenty of small oil galleries in the head for the vtec system etc and from personal experience you will ruin the bearings and oil pump in the new bottom end if the heads filthy.
As I said I'm almost certain you've span a bearing, just the fact I can't hear it in person...

If it was me I'd just buy a used bottom end or long block and sell your head on if your not into cleaning it out.

But make sure you state the head came off bottom end damaged bearings, so next person can clean it ,
Sorry to hear your motor like that.

I think you be better off given it a good clean and rebuild what you have ,at least you know that it fresh bottom end ,be a little dearer but worth it in long run ,
Good luck . Looking forward to your updates !

Right when I was about to go ahead and pull it to the garage, my father wanted to go take it for a test run with new oil, so we did.. and now the noise got louder and worst. I don't want to start the engine so now it's time to take apart the head and see what's wrong.
