Ultimate OEM Brake Upgrade Thread


I'm thinking to upgrade my rear brakes to ek9 calipers. Which 260mm disc's may I use? MG ZR 180?
 
what car and whats current pcd ?

sorry, 1997 civic ek4 vti sedan, I have right now 91 NSX front calipers with Ferodo DS2500 and Tarox G88, and I think I need something more 'big' to the rear..

yes mg discs or civic ep2 (i use civic ep2 on my ek4 on rear)
 
thanks, does it need any kind of spacers?

no, i didnt, straight fit, pads are very very tight when new so maybe worth taking .5mm of pad (i retained my ek4 calipers which is prob why)
 
Would someone mind explaining to me why you need to use the Prelude VTEC front rotors to upgrade to a type R braking system rather than using the ITR rotors and having them redrilled.

I have been looking at the mesurements of both rotors and only found one difference and that is the center hole of the rotor (where the axle nut shows through) is bigger on the ITR versus the prelude VTEC.

I am not doubting the correctness of this information, just have an opportunity to get some ITR rotors from a friend and dont want them if I can't use them on this brake upgrade.

For me...re-drilling Prelude VTEC rotors was the route to take, 4 lug setup due to multi-wheel and tire investments.

To 97-01 integra r
take the ex/si knuckle (with bearing and hub) and bolt on the knuckles. Get the caliper mounting bracket, 23t, grinded 3.2mm off of the surface where it mounts to the knuckle. Get 1996 prelude vtec rotors re-drilled to fit the 4x100 hub. Take the 17cl15vn itr calipers, 23t grinded caliper mounting brackets, prelude vtec rotors, and itr pads and swap them onto the civic dx. You can also press the itr hub into the civic ex bearing, and not grind the bracket, use 97-01 itr rotors, but then you have 5-lug and will need new wheels. You may use legend or vigor calipers, but you should put the right caliper on the left, and vice versa, so to keep the bleeder pointed up.

So when upgrading ek9 single piston calipers to multi piston calipers how do you upgrade the master cylinder. They already have the largest 1".

Would a DC5 master cylinder fit?

I am also using a 4 lug EX/SI knuckle. I plan to stay 4x100. What I am asking is why would someone choose a prelude rotor that is 5x 114 versus an ITR rotor that is also 5x114. It just doesn't make since to me. Since I am keeping 4 lug, I will have to redrill the rotors anyway, what I am asking is are the prelude VTEC rotor and the ITR rotor different in a manner that would prevent me from be successful at redrilling the ITR rotor and using it rather than the prelude VTEC rotor.

The are both 23mm thick, 11.1 inch rotor, and both 5x114. Am I missing something or are they identical and it makes no differnence since i will be redrilling to fit a 4x100 hub? Simply put I have a free set of ITR rotors and don't want to spend the money on Prelude VTEC rotors if I dont have too, also, here in the states, at least oklahoma, the ITR duralast rotor is about 20 bux cheaper than the prelude vtec rotor.

I have not tried to drill an existing 5x114 rotor to 4x100 hole pattern, I would assume there would be issues, 5 vs. 4.

If you have a free rotor set try it out and see if it can be done. I think there will be an issue with either balance or enough room to accommodate the new 4x100 hole pattern.

Thank you! That makes perfect since! I will have to investigate a bit more. So 96 preludes are 4x114.3. Check!

Ok, see that cleared up my concern. I think that I will do it the right way first, experiment second. But hey they are free so once I figure out how much it will cost me to get them redrilled I will be in buisness. Thanks for the quick response and the logical answer!

Just making the best of the situation because I love the 5 lug look.

Definately no room on a 5 lug. I should have the rotors today so we will see but judging by your pictures it would seem that you are correct sir!
 
Can some one tell me if the 5th gen prelude front calipers are the same as ITR? They have identical markings and founds a good price on the set and the 23t brackets.

Dunx, what's the diameter of the original piston in the caliper. I can work out the difference between the standard and uprated ones.

If you have the 1"MC I do not think you need anything more.
