Hey peeps.
How easy/hard is it to carry out a service on an ek9, i.e. cam belt etc?. I've got a good friend whos a mechanic for Jaguar whos always worked on my cars, but never worked on an ek9 before.
He'll be fine to change the spark plugs, fluids, fuel filter etc, but is there any special care/tools needed when changing the cam belt, tensioner, pulley and water pump?

Thanks:nice:

Same as any other car.

Align your cams and crank to TDC (Top Dead Centre) and away you go.

Easy to do, just remove the cam cover casing and loosen the tensioner. Slide the belt off and put a new one back on.

However you also have to remove the valve cover, All the V-belts, move the power steering pump out of the way and remove the pump support, remove the left wheel, the crankshaft pulley, and the engine support.

You can do it with 'normal' tools. The only "special" tool you will probably need is a blocking tool for the crankshaft pulley. This tool fits into the hexagonal opening in the pulley and prevents is from rotating. This way you can loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt (and that mother****er is TIGHT!:D) with a long bar or something.

If you can't find such a tool, you can always make it yourself. It's pretty easy. All you need is a very big nut (you can find that in a good hardware store) that fits into the hexagonal opening from the pulley, and weld a peace of metal to it of about 10 cm.

When I change cambelts on a honda, I always adjust the valve clearance too. The valve cover is off anyway, so you might as well do it.
I don't know the exact values for a B16B engine though... (maybe someone on the forum does?)

If your friend is a mechanic, he will definitely be able to change your cambelt. It's not that hard to do.
If you still have doubts, you can always download a workshop manual for a civic Vti (B16A2 engine), or integra Type R (B18C6) because the principle is exactly the same.
You can find manuals on: hondatech.info: Honda service manuals

Good luck!
:nice:

you will need the tool for the crank pully, the bolt is super tight! i ordered one when i was a tech at honda. apart from that honda cam-belts are one of the easyiest belts to change. you mate wont have a problem if he can get the bottom pully bolt out.

Buy a cam locking tool. its very usefull on twin cam engines it locks both cams together preventing both from moving making the cam bellt change easier. It aint always that easy to get everything at top dead center and trying to keep the cams at the correct angle can be a task. It cost me only 30pounds bought it form lazertools.co.uk - Domain Name Holding Page - Telivo.com :nice:
