Hi guys I'm new to civics so please bare with me!!
I have a 1.5 vtec 1997 civic it's a hatchback, basically I want to know if you could give me some tips to make it faster without doing an engine swap thanks

make it louder-chop up the exhaust, take off the air box
it'll make it feel mad fast:naughty:

seriously though, save your money and spend it on cosmetics.

Unless you have loads of money then you won't make much power.again save weight and simple bolt Ons eg exhaust good induction kit ect..

Stripped out is the way now track season is coming!

Strip it out and sell all the interior bits: Lower weight = better acceleration, better fuel consumption, better handling, better braking. Also, in order to not to upset the weight distribution too much you can move the battery to the boot. The 1.5 is nippy enough as it is, if anything I would try to find a shorter box, the gears are very long! And the brakes are bit of a joke, you could swap them for some EK4 or MB6 hubs/brakes.

Like said, good gearbox and chassis improvement are the way to go.

However if you really want to gain some HP:
- Supersprint header
- Test pipe
- Sportex midpipe
- Silencer of your choice
- Intake
- Remap

You should get 15-20 hp with this setup ... quite few for such investment ... I would stick with gearbox and chassis mods.

Buy an ek4....

On a serious note, some good suspension mods, replace the bushings as I bet there pretty old and worn, lighter wheels with good tyres, brake pad and disc upgrade. Not much point doing anything to the engine.

just turbo it.i use to have 15 civic with no vtech and use greedy turbo kit for it and it was like ek9(in power)

No offence but why would you want to waist your money, would you not rather change the engine if its speed your after

Ek3 has the same brakes as the ek4 so no need to swap. Since its pre-fl it has drums back, but no worries. Those worth much more in every aspect than 242 discs.
Get a s20 gearbox instead the s40, it will be faster like 1 second up to 100km/h.

If you want to keep the 1.5 do some breathing mods, good filter k&n panel filter probably easiest, de cat and get a good catback system spoon/buddyclub etc, mabey a manifold but good ones for d series are rare so i wouldnt bother, lightweight 15" wheels with good tyres, wont be much faster but will feel 100% better to drive and waay more responsive, 262s or mgzs 180 282 calipers and discs up front aswell, all this will cost a fraction of a conversion and still be useable if in the future you do one ;)

I used to have an EK3 and the only thing the drum brakes are better at than discs are hand brake turns. Sure, they will perform well when subject to normal driving, but throw a spirited drive at them when you brake before each corner and they stop working very quickly. This is not something I heard, it's from personal experience. Discs at the back are a must if you want to drive the car fast. The EK3 is a nice nippy wee car, but people seem to forget it was built primarily for economy, not speed!

Drums never failed me. I live 1 km from a mountain, I do spirited drive very often. Also been to Hungaroring GP track a few times, even outperformed fn2, 180sx. And my lap times were better than a fiesta st, and a couple of 150-190 hp cars. I don't think 242 discs would be any benefit. It can cool down but that's all, the shitty brake bias will remain. I would go for 262 rear 282 front, that would make some difference.

For the comment before you:
Ek3 has the cat in the manifold, so you can't just decat that. Have to change the manifold to make it decat. And still...ek3 has 262 stop saying that. It's not an ej9 (which also has 262 if its facelift)

Isn't that what its all about though? If the brakes are cooler, they are less likely to fade. Greater breaking forces can be applied without overheating of parts. Yes they are fine for eco driving, but if you are looking to upgrade your car to "go faster" and therefore have better braking ability, drums just are not the way.

What a waste of time! The guy hasn't even bothered to check this thread!

Love time wasters!
