alright guys i have already dropped a b18c in my 9 and done all the basic breather mods like manifold, exhaust and induction. it just feels now like i need to take it a bit further mainly to beat my dads evo:D. at the moment im soo close he only pulls away slightly from whatever speed even when im in 5th:shocked:. its actually amazed me how well the b18c can cope with bigger cars at high speeds.
anyways my question is that can i put the oem b16b pistons in my motor with the b18c crank and rods? im aware the compression will be something like 12.74 but in the uk we have 99 octane and would keep the stock rev limit. the reason im looking at high compression for power rather than cams is that im a poor student:D and one of my mates can build me the bottom end for next to nothing in labour using university equipment. he is not so sure though on messing round with the head other than interchanging cams as he is still learning this stuff at uni.
i have looked at changing the cams aswell and they arent that expensive till you realise your going to need valvesprings and retainers which drive the price up alot. i would also have to get the springs and retainers fitted buy a proffesional as my mate is not confident eneough to do it. could i not buy a set of cams which make more power than stock but within the factory rev limit?. from what ive picked up on here it seems dangerous to rev higher with high compression anyways. just trying to get the most from my money as im using my student loan:D.
all would be mapped on hondata of course:nice:.

as you can see im pretty clueless and prey on the help of you technical gurus out there :nice: all opinions appreciated.

Well you have the Skunk2 Stage 1 cams, skunk2 claim that is no VT required.
Imo the job you want to do is more hard and requires more knowledge than swap cams, springs and retainers.
Good luck with your B18C with pct's.

sorry what do you mean by cliffs?

cliffs is asking for a short version, i am at work and don't have time to read your entire question :( with cliffs you usually ask your question in 1-2 lines.

replace your b18c cam with b16b cam therefore u can retain the org valve springs & retainers. my advice is to retain the p73 piston unless u plan to throw in a bottle of octane booster during every fill.

You can put the B16b pistons in there with B18 rods, compression will be around 12:1

Thing is, your going to get alot more benefit from putting some quality aftermarket pistons in and running on the better side of 13:1 CR.
If your going to built a bottom end for it then you might as wel put quality parts into it so you get maxmimum gains from the setup.

Your friend should be compfortable disassembling / rebuilding the head excluding machine work if he's able to build the block.

You could buy a set of cams, itll make more power with a quality set.

Its not dangerous to rev higher with higher compression, not with the right internal components. B16a's for allmotor with the right parts can be spun to 10,000rpm all day without worry. Theres only ever point in revving the engine till it stops makign power, after that your just stressing it.

Hondata :nice: Good choice.

Hope this helps! :nice:

due to the high CR with pct pistons.

he's got 99octane in the UK.

no need for booster unless you really want to run some wild ignition timing.

And even then, toluene would probably be a better choice.

Cheapest and simplest option to best your father's EVO is to have better gearing. A 4.785 or 4.9 final drive will leave him well behind.

The bottom end plan sounds fine...

Compliment it with some mild aftermarket cams... (no point going mad if you are going to retain a stock rev limit)

Shorter F.D

Remap & away you go:)
