So I recently bought an EK4 SiR and I really want the engine to be running nicely before I try to mod it in anyway. I'm just wondering what changes I should make first to just improve the general running of the car without spending huge amounts?

Things along the lines of ;

HAMP Oil Filter
Denso IK20(or 22?) Plugs
Resonator Delete

I gave the car a quick service at the weekend so I know it'd been done. Using 10w40 Magnatec and average filters and plugs. Is that Oil recommended or not? I know 10w/40 is correct but is there any Oil people recommend over Magnatec?

See I was about to buy that as my Dad uses it also but there was a great deal on the Magnatec so I went for that.. There isn't really going to be much difference between good oils is there?

You will be fine with the magnatec. Just be sure to use a good filter.

If you want to do a good service on top of the oil change then-
Replace distributor cap and rotor arm
Check ignition timing
Replace Plugs (standard type plugs are fine and far cheaper than iridium)
Replace fuel filter
Air filter (if it's standard and in need of replacing)
Inspect and clean iacv
Change gear oil.

You should be able to do that for around £100 if your doing it yourself.

If you don't know the history of the cam belt then get that done as well as a tensioner.

A coolant change would be a good idea too. Genuine honda Coolant is not that expensive compared to some other brands

I usually get service parts from japserviceparts
I've found them cheapest for things like distributor caps etc and most of the parts are Japanese made

I could do all of that except the Cambelt & Timing I think. I've not done either before, is it difficult? I'll get the HAMP Filter and Denso Plugs swapped in ASAP. I'll be replacing the SparkPlug 'O-Ring' type Seals too. Is there any difficulty in swapping the Dizzy or Rotor Arm? The IACV, Idle Control Valve? I've noticed the Idle searching a couple of times so I'll defintely give it a clean this weekend.

Cheers mate

Yep iacv is the idle control valve. There's a guide on here to cleaning it. Pretty simple.

Cam belt is not to bad to do providing the bottom pulley comes un done easily. Best to just google it for a guide and see how you feel about doing it
If in any doubt get some one else to do it

Dizzy cap just unscrews and rotor arm has one screw. You just need to rock the car back or forwards in gear to get the rotor arm in the right position to get to the screw:nice:

Think if your wanting a healthy engine best to do a compression test to make sure the rings are ok, I'm sure you have already checked for smoke from the exhaust etc though but wouldn't do any harm doing a test.

I'll get that done this weekend then. Should be easy to get off and clean. Same with the Dizzy and Rotor Arm.

Worth checking/adjusting the valve clearances!

That's already on the list mate. Funky Power are wanting to do that for me when the Exhaust centre section is in getting replaced. I watched a guide and I would happily do it if I had a set of Feeler Gauges. I'll see how much a set costs.

There's no smoke on StartUp whatsoever and in normal driving. Need to see in VTEC though. The lad who owned it previously fitted a little Breather/Filter to the Cam Cover Breather instead of the piping back into the Inlet(that is where it's supposed to be plumbed into yes?) and I'm fairly certain this is causing the tiniest smell in the Cabin through the heater when pushing hard. Correct? I've driven it hard a few times and checking Oil to see if it is losing any and it's yet to drop on the dipstick even a mm. I'll see about doing a Compression test. I do know a 'Cowboy' test for checking the Rings... Steep Hill in gear with no throttle.. Lol. I'll leave that and do it properly though. This'll be one of the best looked after SiRs in the Country soon:D
