Dont wanna start a thread that asks 'which is the best...' cause I know that different ECU's will suit some applications better than others.

What I did wanna ask though, is who's had good experiences a particular ecu that works well with a mild-ish tune (intake, header, cams etc) as i dont plan to go much beyond that in future (although having an ECU which can handle more would never be a bad thing...:D)

I've been thinkin along the lines of something fully customizable like the Apexi Power FC, but would really value some of you guys opinions on whats worked well for you...:nice:

In my country we have apexi power fc experts and honda experts, hondata users are getting more whp!

There is a 2- 6 whp gap using the same motor, only switching from apexi power fc to hondata, so I think maybe hondata is a good option, I think it is cheaper also the the power fc.

I have a Mugen ecu on my b18c with minor mods(fujitsubo catback & decat,4-1 mani & CAI)& i love it.Pulls very hard from around 5400rpm.im not too sure how it would work with the b16 though.:nice:

another thing to keep in mind depending on what ecu you go for is if there is someone that can tune it. no point in getting hondata if you need to travel 400 miles for a tuner

Find the best local dyno tuner you can find, and ask him what ECU tuning system he is most familiar with, and go with it. (not VAFC however)
I personally prefer CROME, its a very cost effective option (similar to hondata, but cheaper and with some different features). Most CROME tuners will set your car up with a ECU chipped for CROME, tune it, and send you on your way.

Just spoke to a tuner about fitting & dyno'ing a power fc or aem as I wanted to go for a fully programmable ecu. Only thing is, he quoted me 5 hours to dyno at a cost of £500 on top of the price of the ecu!!:nono:

I've never had a fully programmable ecu before so I dont know if the bloke is tryna take me for a ride or not, but it sounds excessive to me. Any of you guys know roughly how long that kinda job should take?

For me it was 2 hour of dyno, because the tuner had experience with b18c motors and he uses the apexi power fc commander like a gameboy lol, so I think 5 hours is too much, but maybe he wants to make a good job, does this 5 horus include camshafts degrees adjustments ?

if your motor is stock, 1 hour i think it is enough

Thats Bullshit! 500pounds!!!! Over here its only 300aud- 600aud depending on ecu. equates to around 150-300pounds.

ye that seems like a long time to me never had any experiance with honda re maping but went with a mate about 5 years ago to get a 2L 16v corsa mapped and was only there for about 2h and that was with cam adjustments

A good tuner without any car-issues should be able to fully and fine tune a motor comfortably 2-3hours on any good management.:nice:

Don't go with generic ecu if you want to upgrade cams.

My J's racing ecu gave me a whopping up to 10whp gain below 5500rpm but lost 2whp at the top end against my stock ecu, stock cams and current mods.

It just shows, these generic ecus have limits as they're from another engine. All engines are different.

To back that up, the Buggatti Vyeron cars have a 100bhp difference between every one made. This was stated by Buggatti themselves. So some customers have more power than others. lol I'd be pissed if someone had 100Bhp more than mine.

So even if these engines are made with the same parts and specs, they still vary in power.

you also don't need to get an ECU with all that Launch control and Bullshit additonal stuff you dont need for a N/A car that has an LSD. Thats only good for turbo cars. N/A launches better with LSD.

Just as long as it provides good tuning ability and doesn't take away anything that you already have with your stock ECU.(like some cars like DC5 have factory immobilizer)

Hondata has proven very very reliable and make a lot of power. Very popular here and also flexible. You can upload a base map from other users around the world for your TUNER to polish up, which would make things much easier for your tuner.
