car not starting

Hi . I came out to start my ek9 today and the fuel gauge didn't rise, turned it over but it wouldn't start either sounds like it's not getting fuel. When I turn on the ignition I can hear the pump working. This seems to have come all of a sudden as I had the car started the other day. Anybody have any idea what it could be. Does the gauge need to be working for the petrol to pump as the problem seems to be with both the gauge and the engine not getting petrol. Any help much appreciated

The gauge doesn't drop on ek9's when switched off,

It won't drop and rise when turning the ignition on and off unless your fuel level has dropped

Tried putting fuel in it?

O so it's just sitting above the line. Ya I put about 5 litres in suppose that wouldn't budge the needle would it. Could the engine not be Getting fuel even though the fuel pump makes the priming noise when I turn the ignition on.

if it sounds like it's priming then its likely to be getting fuel,
Have you checked for a spark yet?

Make sure you have a good strong spark before doing anything else

That's what i was thinking. Will do ill check tomorrow Morning. What could it be if I'm not getting spark

Coil problems can be quite common,

However some time a failing coil will give a spark but it may not be strong enough to start a cold engine

Sound for all the help bud anyway looks like I'll have to go looking for problems tmrw

Yeah, B series are very reliable engines but distributors (or rather the coils inside them) fail fairly frequently. I had to replace mine a few years back, one day the car just would not start...

It was idleing rough about two weeks ago and cutting out but then fixed itself. Maybe this could be related. Is it just a case of trying a new one or can I test it somehow.

Check if you're getting a spark, if not then you know for sure, even you are it might be too weak. Trying a different dizzy is the easiest way if you have access to one.

Car is getting spark and petrol at the filter. The spark doesn't seem to strong but I wouldn't really know either

Yeah I don't think you can really tell if the spark is strong or not. I don't think the issue is fuel related if you're getting fuel to the filter unless it is completely blocked. Can you borrow a dizzy off someone? Shame you're not closer to Glasgow I have a spare dizzy you could try.

Yea I'd say the fuel is fine. I'll just have to buy one as I don't know anyone that would lend me one. That would be great if I was. There's always something with these cars isn't there

There's one of the wires going to the plug off the alternator with some insulation stripped would it be enough to cause a non start. I tested the plug with a meter set to 20k ohms and got a reading of 1.00
Does anyone know if these readings are ok or not

Tried a new dizzy today and the car still won't start. I'm lost as to what to do next. Up to now I've checked for fuel and pinched the return still nothing. Changed dizzy. Charged battery. Checked timing. Took air intake off nothing. Checked all fuses. No engine light. Have crank. Have spark. Any ideas, alarm maybe

I don't know tbh. But there is fuel getting up to the fuel rail
