Burning Oil

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share something I noticed on my b16b engine. After each service with fresh oil (Motul Sport 5w50 or Motul 8100 5w40) for the first 3 months I have no issues and dip stick shows oil level is full. After the 3rd month or so I noticed the oil level goes down by say half a litre every 250km and have to top up.

I only use the car for weekends and have to admit that i do push the thing to its limits when i do use it. Engine is completely stock bar the usual bolt on's and an ECU. Dont know if this is relevant but vtec is set to engage on 4800rpm and limiter set to 9100rpm. I noticed the same oil issue before the ECU and map where vtec engaged at 6200 rpm and limiter on 8400rpm. At the drag strip I had my mechanic behind me to check the exhaust for any signs of burning oil but he said no signs at all.

I know these engines do have a tendency to burn oil but half a liter every 250km's I think is a tad too much. Thinking of trying a different oil brand but here in Malta Motul oil is the only way to go and all swear by it so no idea what others are using.

Anyone on here experiencing something similar?

Thanks

I've experienced similar consumption when using 5w40 in the past
I would suggest trying a 10w40 next time or even 10w50 due to hotter weather in your country.
Using 10w40 massively reduced consumption for me. I would recomended gulf competition oil

Thanks for the feedback guys....will try a different viscosity oil and brand. Heard that Eneos is a very good oil and should be a distributor here in Malta since I have no idea of who imports Gulf oil over here if there is any. As I said everybody shouting out Motul oil here so everybody stocks that o_O

Sorry to thread jack but has anyone else have another solution to this problem? I have tried 0/40 mobil 1 new life, switched to Fusche titan pro race 10/50 but still the same effect. The levels drop to half way between the min and max point on the dipstick on a 140 mile trip don't about 70-90mph (London to Portsmouth and back). No smoke coming out the exhaust climbing through the revs and on overrun. Engine is a stock b18c6 with exhaust manifold and catback system with cat removed

Thanks

I found a Gulf distributor here in Malta and will give it a go in my next service and see how it goes....

I don't suppose an oil catch can will help with this would it? I've been putting it down as the engine is throwing the oil out into the intake and being burnt off. I don't know how my crankcase pressure would reach high levels on a stock engine though lol.

Funny thing is, the engine doesn't loose a drop of oil city driving, just looses it when I go on the motor way for about an hour doing 70+

If your inlet manifold looks oily when you look in through the throttle body then it's possible that your pcv (positive crankcase vent) valve is duff, they are about £12 to replace and quite easy

I'll have a look through my inlet tonight. Either way, I'm going to be installing a catch can. Going to be eliminating the pcv entirely with two hoses running from the rocker cover and black box to the can which is vented

If there is oil in the intake manifold, will it eventually burn off once the catch can is installed or will I have to unbolt it and clean it?

If it isn't this, then oil viscosity is the next assumption. Can 10w/40 really help? I'm running 10w/50 right now but they're both in the UK climate range.

Thanks
