Right, my car ran sweet then one day i turned the key and it was missfiring and all sorts. Turned out my rotor arm screw fell out causing some damage to the cap etc. Replaced the rotor, cap and coil pack. Also took the opitunity to change oil and spark plugs.

Now my car struggles to start (turns over 5 times before firing) and revs up really flat and slow in all gears.

Any ideas?

Cheers guys.

You may have knackered the coil in the distributor, when the contact points break the coils charge has nowhere to go. This overloads the coil and burns it out.
It's worth a try but I can't be sure that's your issue.

If the coil was gone the car wouldnt run, have you check to see if there are any fault codes? did you remove the distributer from the engine to replace the rotor?

I was thinking more damaged than actually broken. Unless they dont really get damaged and either work or don't?

Have you tried changing the ignition control module in the dizzy too? You might as well considering you've changed the rotor and coil, that would cover everything in the dizzy then

They are cheap and easy to do... plus considering you've changed everything else I'd bet it's the cause of your erratic running

Cheers Yazza, I will give it a go. It has to be dizzy related, the car was spot on until that bolt came out and chewed the insides to bits! Where did you get yours?

Ebays mate, it's one of those weird parts that's exactly the same as a rover item. I did a post with the part numbers on somewhere...

The cars down at my local garage atm, I did all I could so took it there. I will buy the one off that link and take it down to them. Thanks man

UPDATE

I installed the new ICM (Rover part as Yazza suggested - Thanks dude) Was a bit of an arse as my dizzy had the two bolts on the outside to remove it, meaning I had to take the Vtec unit off to get to them - but all sorted.

Put everything back together and started her up, THE SAME AGAIN!!?? Cranked a few times before starting then on came the engine light.

HOWEVER, I took it for a drive to see if the revving issue remained and to my surprise the engine light went out and the car was back to normal!...For 5mins Until it came back on again and the revs were once again flat.

If I cut the ignition mid drive and fired the car back up, it would fire first time and the light would't come on and the car would drive normally (revs and vtec etc) but this only lasted 5 mins before going back.

So now the issue is intermittent, which I guess is some sort of progress.

Whats my next move? Maybe ECU related?

I would check the dizzy wiring loom carefully, a broken wire or bad connection somewhere will often cause an intermittent issue like that.

Argh intermittent - the worst kind of problem. I agree with above you're best checking all plugs etc. for any loose connections. As the wiring has probably been disturbed quite a lot recently.

Okay will do, I haven't got that plastic cover inside the dizzy anymore as it was buggered from the loose screw smashing around in there. Is that an issue do you think?
