hi guys today is turning into one of those days. So have issues with timing but have now discovered another problem. The crank is locking up. It turns to a certain point just after bdc cylinder one and then stops. It doesn't seem to be caused by contact with valves as with the belt off the cams can be turned freely in either direction. When I put the engine together initially it was out the car and on a stand and turned freely. It's now fitted and I was about to do the valve clearance when I noticed the timing marks wernt correct so started to re time it. Had issues with adjustable pulleys but now sorted. It's just the crank locking I can't get my head around. Any ideas before I start pulling it apart?

Should of said in post but it's a b16b head b18c4 block and crank with je pistons and eagle rods

So it did turn freely on the stand built up? And now its in the car it stops?
Flywheel/clutch not catching anything? Have you got spark plugs in?

Yeah man on the stand with plugs out was free as a bird. Plugs out now and it just nips at one spot. Going to have a look at the clutch flywheel now.

Does sound like something is grabbing it.
Have you tried turning it the other way? I know it's not great practice.
Not in gear is it?

The position is worrying because of course 2&3 will be at the top.

Your cam test doesnt necessarily proove anything. If a valve is bent it will stick out, and may still move freely otherwise.

You would know if you had bent a valve though..? No turning the crank without the cams attached?

And just after bdc should mean its not the valves...it would be just before. - Unless the valve catches the piston up trying to open and is contacting. Seems unlikely.

Odd.

I'd start by taking the Cambelt off. Try and move bottom end and top end seperately.
You've not put adjustable cam gears in?

Issue now resolved. Thanks for the input guys. The clutch cover was catching the lug part of the bell housing. I don't really know what the proper name for it is but its in the top left of the bell housing as you look into it. Might have a purpose or be part of the casting process. Not overly thrilled about it as its a brand new rpc clutch and had just been balanced but I've had to file it slightly and the same on the bell housing. I'll stick some pics up when I get a chance. Cheers again for getting back to me.

I think I know the part you mean. It's like a cylinder that sticks out the bell housing?
I've no idea what it does either, I'm using an RPC clutch this time round aswell so we'll see if I have the same issue.
I think I'll just grind that cylinder piece right back instead of grinding my clutch cover, as you say just been balanced so don't want to upset that if I can help it.
