they make a valve stem puller and you can find it just about any good tool shop or store. i used a couple flat head screw drivers to get mine off before i found the tool. with the flat heads or the special tool you will destroy the old valve guides, so be sure to order brand new ones to...

just a thought, check all vacuum lines in the engine bay. its easy to knock one or pull one off and not even know it. just take a couple min's to look around, follow all hoses and ensure they are good.
