Hey guys going to remove my engine out my ek9 next week and was wondering what the best order is for removing and if theres anything to keep an eye out for

Cheers

If you have access to an engine crane it does come out from the top, but its really up to you. If you can lift the front of the car high enough then it can come out from the bottom also. Ive never done one on the ground so maybe not the best person to say. I use a ramp and drop the engine and box or engine, box, hubs, shafts, subframe and front suspension onto a trolley then lift the car up.

Maybe someone who has tried both ways on the deck has an opinion?

I always come out the top. Done this atleast 5-6times now so getting pretty decent at doing it quickly lol
I don't have a lift otherwise I'd do what rob suggests and drop it on a trolley/pallet/carpet whatever and lift the car.

I've not pulled the engine and box out together but I have fitted them together so I assume they can come out the same way. Only reason I've not tried it is because I can never get enough swing with a hammer to get the little pin out of the gear linkage. So have to undo it from the stick end and remove the box separate.

@jesse888 got to love the b*tch pin mate lol :angry2:

I would start at the top mate, disconnect all electrical connectors etc, coolant hoses, air intake, exhaust manifold. Then do the shafts, linkage, drain the oils and so on underneath. Leave the mounts till last and your ready to take it out.
You taking the engine and box together?

Me and a mate with a ramp and impact guns managed engine and box out an aerodeck in 43 minutes (wee bit rough with some of the stuff we didn't want tho lol) But take your time... It should all be fairly obvious what needs to come off/be disconnected.

I usually do it this way round but in reality it doesn't matter which order really.

shafts out first
Disconnect exhaust
Bottom rear mount bolts
Intermediate shaft bolts
Gearbox brace bolts(assuming removing box first)
Linkage disconnected
Start motor out
Gearbox side torque mount
Disconnect clutch Slave from box
All box bolts
Slide her out through the drivers wheel arch

Then it's engine
Rad hoses off
Wiring off
Crane in place and undo the remaining mounts
Out she comes.

I suppose it depends what lifting gear you have

I did mine in my garage and dropped it out the bottom and new engine back in the same way

I used an industrial size trolley jack and packed it up with a few blocks and this allowed me to lift the front of the car high enough to slip the engine and box out the front corner of the engine bay

I lowered the car down and rested the engine on a dolly first then un-bolted it from the mounts and lifted the car up away from it before pulling it out

Not sure if the ek9 is the same as the crx.
I always managed to keep the engine loom on the motor while removing it. I disconnected the loom from the fuse box. 2 big connectors and a crosspoint screwdriver was all that was needed.

Ive always removed the motor out the top with gearbox still attatched. Same goes for installing it.

I can't remove the loom because my avcr is wired Into the ecu plugs...
Box out with engine is best bet but you got to remove the bitch pin first....

Done it both ways dropped engine onto a trolly jack and lifted the front end n slid it out and also used an engine crane and lifted it out, engine crane was alot easier and safer id sayas you have more control once its free from the mounts

I have had just the box, or both together 5-6 times. I have an engine crane, its easy peasy upwards.

Removed mine without engine crane. I jacked up the car, put a small pallet with tyre on it under the engine, lowered it onto the pallet until the engine sat in the tyre (think I had to take both front wheels off to do that). When the engine sat on the pallet I undid all the mounts (you can only leave the three main ones in place for doing this i.e. remove the torque mounts beforehand). Then I jacked the car up and pulled the engine out. It was a PITA - mainly jacking the car up that high - but it can be done. Next time I'll borrow a crane and if you can get your hands on one I'd suggest to do the same.

Bitch pin is easy also you only remove the engine loom not the whole loom. So having the avcr wired in at the ecu plugs shouldnt make any difference.

On my back on the floor I can't swing the hammer enough to push it out.
I did try pulling the loom out with it and the avcr wiring stops it. I have actually tried lol

Some good info here! Will be referring back to this in the next couple of weeks when I take my b16b out:)
