Hello everyone.

I have a b16b engine in my ee9 civic VT. I have a chance of some skunk2 pro2 cams, gears, springs and retainers. My question is does the standard engine have enough compression to run them effectively....or would a piston change be needed? I don't want to mess around with the bottom end.

I'm using an s4c with a 5.1 final drive so it's already pretty darn revvy, but I'd like to really get that top end biting even more.Have a feeling pro 2s may be a little too much for a stock block though?

Cheers

They will run and you will see some gains but pro2 are massive cams, defo need a compression bump or displacement bump. And the b16b pistons are already pretty close.

Pro1's would be perfect.

Skim the head and run a thin headgasket. How much skim I dont have the experience to say tbh.

Need to be careful with those cams and skimming heads! Ideally you would want more compression and deeply pocketed piston, but good gain will be had! I've a b16b engine in a car I work on here with all the skunk stuff you have mentioned but it is running on throttle bodies and a vibrant exhaust manifold it made 216hp with very good torque too over 140ft/lbs as far as I remember...

How much of a head skim could I go with without risking contact?

Cheers!

Skimming the head is not the way to make compression by right you should be using up rated Pistons, I would skim as little as possible so you have a nice surface for the gasket and leave it at that!

Another thing if this is a road car, I have found with three cars I had worked on, that a car with pro2's and updated valve springs and still using a standard distributors are way more likely to have issue with distributor failure!

I might just leave it then, I don't want to get into bottom end / piston work as the costs start to spiral. I was hoping I could just plonk the cams/ valvetrain in, remap and go.

You can with standard pistons, no issue, you just need to get you cam timing right, that engine I mentioned above was a unopened b16b!

Very well, as said its on throttle bodies and 100 octane fuel but it's been rallying the last 3 years

I agree with tahir, pro2s Will be a but big for standard displacement / compression.

You May get more with other cams.
