oil cooling

Can I run the sandwich plate for the cooler on top of the sandwich plate for the gauges?

I'll probably move the gauges over to the sump eventually but for now can I get away with that?

Mine is like that ATM, has been like that for years on the old b16b it had and never a leak so...

You don't have to but I think it's a good idea tbh.

Had a quick Google for this but just to clarify... You don't put any oil in the cooler do you? Just fit it then start the engine then top up oil.

With me having the mocal thermostatic sandwich plate what temp will it start pumping oil through the cooler? I think I read 85 degrees somewhere.

Also does anyone know the torque setting for screwing the sandwich plate on?

I've got the cooler mounted just been waiting for my oil to turn up to do an oil/filter change before connecting the lines.

Cheers

I've never filled the cooler seperately.
Mocal stats are never fully shut iirc..
Mine stays around 75c so I guess that's what you'll see.

Got it all fitted and tested it the other night.

Went down the motorway sitting at 70 in 5th and giving it a bit of a blip here and there to get it into boost and the temp was rising a lot. Hit about 105 and it didn't seem like it was going to stabilise.

seems very hot
mine runs 70ish on an average temperature day cruising on a motorway, cooler than that at night time. it doesnt get any hotter when i boost either.
never once seen it over 85 on the road and that was sat still in traffic...

Yeah there's something not right. Not sure what to do about it.

Thinking it may be sat too close to the turbo along with not getting enough air to it.

Mine will get hotter if I start boosting it...
75c cruising temp whether it's day or night as that's stat temp roughly.
Never hit 100 on the road though and mine sits right next to my down pipe.

What size did you buy? What brand?

Where is your oil cooler? Mines pretty near my turbo and not in a great place for air flow when my bumpers on..

Guess where you take temp from makes a difference too, mines from the sump and I'll have air flowing over it to cool it a bit.

In the sump Defo reads cooler, my old b18 n/a used to read really low on cruise but soon as you stopped it would shoot up.
Even if his temp is in a sandwich plate(like mine) it shouldn't read that high, unless poor quality gauge?

I went for the mocal cooler and Sandwich plate and it's a 19 row.

It's mounted on top of my intercooler and you can see it through the grill so it should be getting some air to it.

The temp is taken from the sandwich plate. I suppose it could be the gauge but I hope it isn't even though that would be the easiest fix.

Went out today to try and find a performance issue I'm having.
Gave the car full rage and didn't see more than 90c

You want your oil to get beyond 85degrees or it will retain moisture.

I've noticed that while I was running the engines in that the breather pipes would build up white gunk in them.
Get the oil hot and it's cleaned it right out.

90 degrees is perfect Jesse. I was chatting to my tuner about oil - he was saying he was horrified about some of his past customers not using a thermostatic setup. I said "well except on a track car" but he wasnt keen in that either.
Guy is a model of best practice mind!

By the way my newly bult b18c tops out at 120c on the road! - cooler soon to be in the post!

I'll be running my new forged engine on the road without a cooler for awhile aswell.
