DIY: B series rocker cover painting

Cool man. Much better with the paint taken off the lettering. Did you just put a box over where the rocker cover sits to protect the engine?

cheers i think so too. lol no mate, my new rocker is sitting on the box and that box is then sitting on my spare rocker cover which is on the car and only did that to take a picture

the spare cover will have a Spoon Sports design on it after ive finished the rising sun :)

Don't think this has been covered in the thread yet..

The people who have done custom covers and covers in a non wrinkle finish, do you use normal paint or do you hunt down high temp stuff?
Only asking as a friend did his cover with normal primer, paint + laquer and noticed that it started to peel in places after a few months
I'm planning on doing my cover blue but haven't seen anywhere that does blue in a high temp paint

Probably is a stupid question but want to make sure I'm going to get a good long lasting finish once I get round to doing it

Well considering the engine bay gets quite hot i would say vht paint. Have you not done a ebay search of "blue vht paint" i just did and loads of paints came up. Blue, anodized blue, ford blue? Loads of different shades mate. Can get them for around a tenner.

I asked the same question about high temp before doing mine and the advice i was given is theres no need for high temp paint. High temp paint also cant be lacquerd over

Aslong as the rocker has been paint stripped, roughd up with sandpaper, de-greased, etch primed and painted in your chosen color you should be fine. Remember to leave the rocker for 24 hours after you done the primer so it hardens

Dont put it on too thick either, go nice and light with 10-15 minutes between coats. The color will be looking good after about 3 - 4 coats on average

And dont touch it with grubby hands at all, that could be one reason your mates cover peeled

What paint did you use civicx3? You airbrushed yours didnt you?

What does etch prime mean?

Cheers for that civicx3, that could be what caused his to peel but what you've said is the plan that I had in my head for mine, so I'll give it a try with that

Danger_day, I did have a quick look a wee while ago but never really saw anything... Eyes must be painted on!

good luck :nice:

yeah mine was airbrushed but any solvent based colors should do you fine

etch primer is one to use on alloy metals like the rocker, and i think its slightly acidic so it really binds into the metal, pretty sure thats how it works

Ahaha steve lol. There seems to be quite a selection on ebay of different paints. I got some through today in the post. Going to give it a go. Only used a rattle can once so i'm bricking it a bit. If it al goes tits up i can just use paint stripper/thinner stuff to remove it i hope.

Civicx3 do you have to use primer or should it be okay just spraying onto bare metal?

i wouldnt no, if you want it to last you need some etch primer first, local stores sell it or you can find it on ebay etc.. :nice:

The easy way is to take by some can blast it free of paint

I have made a couple of wrinkle cover.. this one was my first xD .

Just done mine but the wrinkles don't seem as good as that, did you paint horizontally/vertically then diagonally as per the instructions, maybe I used too much paint :(

Have you baked it or used a heat gun? Heat will determine the look of the "wrinkling"

I waited for it to wrinkle then baked it in the oven, seems ok but the wrinkles seem to be in a line rather than the same effect all over. I'll try and get a pic. It does say it needs heavy coats on it which is what I did, was pretty cold mind when I did it.
