basic questions on gains

Hey all, I have a bit off a question for y'all.

I am undecided what I intend to do, NA, or Turbo.

I would like to see what the possibilities are with B16 and B18 engines, where can I find out the info such as highest realistic power from a NA B16/ 18 engine, like wise turbo..

I have never really researched into performance gains til now, I have always been for looks. To be honest with you all I dont really no where to look or what im looking at, so some basic information to get me started would be a great read for me.

I hope I made sense, cheers.

Realistic N/A b18 power would be 240-245hp, keeping it 1800cc
Turbo then it's down to how deep is your pocket basically. 1000hp if you want.

For what type of racing you want to use your car? :) or just for daily ?

Its a weekend/ fun car, I use a van for work, so I dont use it every day, which is good. But I would love crazy power.

I wouldn't really want your average gains I would love something that people would really wow at!

I also dont know which engines work best with certain performance parts, which engine is best to turbo etc and why!?

Definitely turbo if you want the best bang for your buck. 500hp will cost a good bit of coin but a 300hp civic can set you back as little as 2k and that is a quick car!

See if any of the boosted lads live near you and ask for a spin see what there are running and just how quick it is.

I had 280 out of b16b before it melted a piston. Was pretty fast!

Doesn't matter which engine you use tbh, seen as you'll need to replace most of the parts anyway.
To do it properly(500hp) I wouldn't expect much change from 10k tbh

Turbo is the way to go I think, n/a is fun but you will pump a lot of money onto an engine to try make really good figures from a b-series and may still not end up with what you want, k-swap is an option but it's expensive to do the swap and bolt ons then aren't cheap too.

With turbo'ing you would need good standard engine and a good quality Turbo kit to see 250-400 depending on the setup and mapper. Vtec6000 on here got 400hp from a b18c4 turbo.
If I have to change the engine in my car again I think I'd end up going the turbo route and try to make in the 300's hp

As said, turbo is bang for your buck all day long. N/A is great fun but turbo definitely for tuning possibilities. I'm building a high comp N/A B18C at the moment which I expect will see maybe 230-240bhp.

Reason I'm staying N/A is because I think the Type-R, B Series & EK9 is all about N/A power, so I didn't want to go the turbo route and decided to squeeze a good amount out of N/A. If you're not bothered about any heritage and just want pure power & tuning potential, go for a turbo build.

People who ask this type of question generally do no kind of build. Either one requires patience, lots of research and a large wad of cash. People with the aforementioned traits dont ask people on forums what kind of build they should do.
:alone:

Just an example, 500bhp Turbo, what would this set me back!?

:angry2:

In terms of NA builds, B16B and B18C have the same power potential, capped at around 250bhp. Unless you're tuning in America on a Disney Dyno in which case you can get 300hp at the wheels.

Personally I wouldn't want anything else in a 90's Honda other than a healthy/reliable B18C with bolt-on's & re-map, I like a robust engine you don't have to worry about too much past the fluid levels. But if you want to give bystanders the 'wow' factor you best go down the turbo route!

the fact that you have came from mostly looks over performance and then said you want something people will really "wow" at tells me that if the build went ahead its for nothing more than vanity, tbh you have to figure out if your driving around the streets at the weekend/drag/track/time attack etc this will help you decide what sort of build to undertake, if you dont plan to track/race the car and use it to jump around in at the weekend you really dont need 500hp imo

@689R pretty much hit the nail on the head saying people who do big builds dont say what should i build get a few opinions then build it.

But to answer the question for bang for buck turbo but for reliability i would stick with n/a unless you have the know how to fix/build these kind of things. not saying turbo isnt reliable if built properly but n/a is way cooler unless you actually need the extra power for something else ie raceing.

Not hateing here just my 2p worth

Only reason I went turbo is because I didn't want to spend on a k-swap....
Now im replacing the piston I fried!

Now you and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block yea? :p

I am the mad scientist! Lol
Blocks ripped apart just waiting on funds and machining.

As been said above, 300hp is way more than enough on the roads. Unless you are doing "motorway pulls" all the time.

Weekend/ fun car? B16 turbo all day. Makes you a lazy driver having low down torque! That's if you don't spec a turbo that's usually found on a lorry!
I had a b16 running 270whp on a conservative dyno, went 12.4@118mph.
A video for reference,

Murray your car is a weapon.

Also "Disney Dyno" :lol:so true haha.
