hi everyone,
was chatting to a chap who does a good few track days in his dc2.
i said to him obviously you have a baffle sumo its the firsty thing id do and he said no.he said he runs 250ml of oil extra and he has never had a prob after years of track days on slicks.extra oil stops the starvation.
hes never blown an engine.
anyone ever hear anything like this?

Yeah,
From lots of people.
I have baffles and run slightly over full.
You will never know without an oil pressure gauge,
Its cheap insurance.

Driving style also has influence on what you are describing.
Did he have an oil pressure gauge in his DC2? He may have been watching it like a hawk.
250ml [.25qts] is not much more over. I burn that much in one or two 20 minute track session. You really dont want to go over the "full" marker with oil. It takes power to have the crank plow through the oil and you could even blow seals/gaskets if filled too much over.

Baffles help keep the oil at the pick-up when in high G turns without robbing power or blowing seals. Its added insurance that has been proven for a very long time.

I've been told by more than one person including a semi-pro rally driver that overfilling the engine with oil is almost as bad as not filling it up enough. The two marks are there for a reason I'd think!

I'd just whack baffles in there to be safe mate.
As said shouldnt over fill by too much plus he may be doing lots of trackdays but how fast is he turning.
For the sake of £50 you can use your sump and get them welded in.

I have a baffled sump for b16b/b18c for sale :)

Over full by that amount wouldn't blow seals or damage anything.
The crank isn't submerged like that either, you would never notice a drop in power.
If you see where the dipstick max is in relation to sump depth overful a little wouldn't change anything
It's common practice by a lot of track guys.

In two hours you burn a litre of oil tama?!
That's a bit excessive is it not!?
I used about 200ml in a whole day open pitlane and wasn't holding back it all day!!

I think I burnt about 600ml that's all day with b18. I don't know one b18 that doesn't use oil on track.
On the road however my engine doesn't use a drop.

Still not excessive at all really :)
Yours was slightly smokey on over run though,
Could have been matts. I get confused between the two!

Yup I do and I dont think its excessive with the flogging I administer. :p

i always thought too much oil is as bad as not enough. that leads to the next prob, during a track day how can you measure your oil level through the day when the oil is going to be pumping hot for ages??

how much? :) welded in or one that was done in a factory like spoon ones.

On a track day you keep it on max mark all day, simple as that.
Check after very session when your on a cool down.

Regarding sumps;
Most cost effective is to weld in baffles.
Easiest is buy a moroso with the baffles already in, also has temp fitting and drain back fitting
Next step would be the kicked out moroso, this has trap doors but the increased capacity makes it expensive at oil changes. Can be worth it on track though
And if your baller, dry sump :D

Spoon/mugen sumps I don't really see why you would choose over moroso.

oooooooooooh, dry sump. You know, that is beyond baller, that is 007 stuff there!

Cheapest I found was summit racing in America. I think it was under £100 for the standard one, I didn't get caught at customs either :D

No one over here seems to stock or sell them :(

Alot of it depends on what track you use. Certain corners are going to cause oil starvation more than others

Mondello is the track ill be on. Look it up on youtube. Lots of righthand corners. Might get the weld in baffle kit

I wouldn't advise running too much oil, it will only get spat back out when the engine breaths and we all know it only spits it back in your intake to be burnt (unless you have a catch can)

Sump baffles are next to nothing and only require a few spot welds but thats just my opinion.
