I'm getting a whine on my S4C EK4 gearbox at very low speed. i have no other problems with it. Shifts well, doesn't crunch and mainly does this after cold start ups on morning. any idea what would cause this or how it can be solved? thanks

It will whine a bit in 1st gear, especially when cold. I think this is normal. You can always try changing the fluid for good measure.

great! thanks for the quick responses. was afraid that it would have been bearings or something. will order the Honda MTF asap!

this happened to me before an the main bearing on the input shaft went...but try changin the oil first an see...if it still does it wit dif oil u need a new input bearing!

hi guys. since i last posted here i've replaced the oil in my gearbox with Honda MTF. i must say that shifting is a ton smoother and it feels really good. i used to get a tiny vibration if holding the gearstick while driving and that's gone now.. the car sounds quieter as well. one thing i forgot to mention was that the S4C came with a factory. since the change i am positive that the LSD is working better:nice: do u guys know what kind of LSD comes in the EK4 SiR-II's S4C box??? as far as i know, the EK9/DC2 has a helical.

helical aswell i beleive,, lathough if your car is an import it is quite common for the japs to replace teh helical diff with a friction plate type, does your car make interesting noises on full lock low speed turns!?!?

This car came to my country and was sold brand new at a sole local Honda Dealership.. It's a 100% stock car with the exception of a set of Spoon mounts. thanks for the quick response. appreciate it!!

Hi there, the box on my EK4 has quite a noticable whine, loudest in second gear. Appears to be linked to road speed so I'd thinking an output bearing of some sort unless anyone knows better? Noise disappears after about 40mph when the frequency extends beyond audiable levels.

Will change the fluid soon, but I am planning on refurbing the gearbox within the next couple of months with MFactory ratios and would like a bit of advice on any bearings etc that would need changing.

The only factory Helical LSD is the Type-R one, which is the same unit for the EK9 and DC2R. All other factory-option LSD's are Viscous :)

If you are going to be rebuilding your transmission, I would change all the synchro rings, seals and bearings, regardless of their condition.

Honda don't sell the synchro rings seperate from the hub/slider though, so you'll have to shop around the OEM parts stores.

Oh yeah, make sure to use Honda MTF, nothing else :)

what about redline, amsoil, royal purple ...????

I believe the cable trannies were viscous as well, but not 100%, would need to check

Changed (or rather added) the box oil, problem solved. She is now silky smooth in acceleration and gearchanges. Seems the previous owner had neglected to check the oil level in quite a while!
