Wink Honda OBD0 - OBD1 - OBD2A - OBD2B ecu differences.

Hello,

Well all my questions started when i was trying to get and apexi power fc + commander for my car.

The apexi power fc that i found for my car was compatible with Honda Integra Type R 95 - 2001 and 97 - 98 (august) EK9 Honda Civic Type R.

I was very confused, because the Computer for 98 Sept - 00 EK9 Honda Civic Type R, was like 600 $ + more expensive. The Apexi Power Fc + Commander goes for around 700 $ + shipping.

On hondas 1991 + the ecus are found at the passenger footwell.

First of all, lets see a pictures that explain the physical differences between OBD0, ODB1, OBD2A, OBD2B.

From up to down order.

OBDII b 98 Sept - 00 Honda Civics
OBDII a ECU 96 - 98 (August) Hondas Civic and 95 - 2001 Integras
OBD I ECU 92 - 95 Hondas
OBD 0 88 - 91 Hondas

Well after searching over the internet, i decided to see for myself my ecu. I wrote this little tutorial. My car is a 1999 Honda Civic Type R

First remove the 3 screws you find on this plastic cover, 2 are made of plastic and 1 a meta screw. See the red circles.

After removing this plastic panel, you will see the ecu

As you can see my 1999 honda civic type r ecu is a obd2b

This means that for me to setup a apexi power fc + commander ecu, i will have to buy a conversion harness / ecu jumper from obd2b to obd2a.

I found one! hehehe

You can get one from http://phearable.net for like 150 - 160 $ shipped.

Right now i have a stock motor, so i decided to buy a chipped ecu from phearable. Maybe by the end of this year i decide to buy a apexi power fc + commander.

I hope you find this usefull, since i didnt't find it anywhere else.

as my b16b is from a 2000 ek9 thus obd2b and as you say the power fc's are like twice the price of the 2a's

I didn't found 92-95 civic's apexi power fc in japan aftermarket parts sellers. I read on another forum, 1 guy in the US, had one, on his 95 civic, but with a obd1 to obd2a conversion harness

Question Re: Honda OBD0 - OBD1 - OBD2A - OBD2B ecu differences.

Hey man!!, I think you just saved me from alot of frustration!! I'm getting soo confused I have a VTEC d16y8 head for my NON-VTEC d16a6 block. The head is off a 99' Honda Civic EX, and has been nothing but confusing, when I had my crappy d15b1 in the bay I successfully converted to MPFI set-up. So, in turn I'm treating it as a 1989' Honda CRX Si. But now comes the tricky part (to me atleast!), I need to wire the VTEC for my d16y8 head and buy a Jumper Harness. I just bought a P28 ECU by accident on eBay.ca for $40, can I use that ECU in conjunction with my d16y8 swap?. EXTREMELY CONFUSED. I hope you can guide me through this mess!!. Thanks for ANYYY replies!!!!!!.

P.S. I might be rebuilding the head to "Stage 3" skunk2 set-up, but we'll talk about that later
