radio and CD fault

hi i have a facelift ek9 with a double DIN head unit.(one at the top and one at the bottom). i think it is an after market one as the bottom unit is a mini disk player and the top a radio and cd. they all work together and tilt the same. radio does not work for obvious reasons as it needs a band expander but i am stumped with the cd. it accepts cds but wont play them. is it because in japan they use different code? please help dont waqnt to get rid as it is a quality piece of equipment. dont want to do what my brother did to his wich was take it out for a sony one. will post what make mine is and what my brothers one is that he took out. someone sed it was worth a bit the unit he took out.
