Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
My planned mods would only be intake, headers, exhaust & clutch. To be more specific modified stock box, mugen headers, spoon b pipe & spoon n1 exhaust. Ogura clutch w/ lightened flywheel & tein ss coilovers. Or is this just a waste of money again? hehe.
Would I gain anything? This is just plug & play right? no tuning needed for my setup?

If you do not have the ability to tune on a dyno, then the spoon one is decent. If you have access to dyno facilities, hondata, crome, or whatever your dyno operator is competent at tuning would be best. |

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
I dont have access to a dyno....what gains would I be expecting from the spoon ecu? I've heard it gets rid of the redline? But I dont wanna mess up my engine by revving higher than redline w/ stock internals. What benefit does it do? Would it require higher octane fuel? or standard unleaded fuel ok? like 92 ocatne w/c we have here.

well even if you can't tune on a dyno you can always street tune which is just about 85-90% as effective with a skilled tuner...

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
I believe someone had their spark plugs melted becuase of street tuning... safer to just get a generic ecu.

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
just thought I give my input, from my tuning (that thread about dyno), it was done by street tune on the way to dyno.
and the Tuner was very good, the car already gain the peak power, and there wasn't much to improve on. Things which were done on the dyno was playing around with VTEC point, push the ignition timing a bit (listening to knock using Det Cans?) and see what kind of response it has on the curve. |

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
jojo I have the SPOON ecu for my 9 and DC2R.
With my 9, everything is fine except the lowered vtec transition at 5000rpm. On my car theres a massive power dip between 5000-6000rpm. Power comes piling on from 6000rpm to 9100rpm. I'm not sure why it does that but many users here are experiencing the same. I bought a $50 Buddyclub V-CON to counter the problem and set VTEC at 6000rpm. Now its running great and no more dips!!! On my stock DC2R, I'm also experiencing the same thing except not as bad on the 1.8L compared to the 1.6L. but still theres a power dip between 5000-5800rpm. Top end really picks up and is carried out deeper above 8000rpm. normally power dies at about 8200rpm. I'm also getting idle problems as it sits at 1500rpm the whole time even when its hot. These are just the few things you get with a generic ecu...

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
get a custom tunable ECU once you've done all the basics and gear mods... The moneys worth will be there.
Next stage will be cams.

Re: Is spoon ECU worth getting for EK9?
just saw this...have spoken with a few other people who have/had the spoon ecu and they are all talking about this power dip...i dont know why but i dont get this.
its just Full power all the way from 5500 right up and it made the car alot faster(maybe not so much in the normal sense of the word), with the vtec point being lower its easier to "keep on the boil" if you know what i mean. it also removes the speed limiter aswell (if your car hasnt been converted) If you are only planning on doing breathing and exhaust mods then the spoon is perfect IMO, fair enough if you are maybe supercharging for example (or any serious engine work), then it would be best to go out and buy a tuneable ECU. the other argument "for" is that this is Spoon were talking about, they arent going to put something on the market that will damage engines. Obviously all of the above is my own opinion so no digs ![]() Im unfortunatley considering selling mine in the future as they are worth good money and im poor would really really hate to see it go though.
