**thread unstuck and link added to best links archive:

http://www.ek9.org/forum/general-chat/10864-ek9-org-best-links-archive.html **

I noticed a lot of people on here are from different countries and though we all speak English on this forum, we use different words to describe the same parts, so I'm making this thread to clear things up, i ask anybody to feel free to contribute:

Words that mean the same thing:
Back box = muffler
Bonnet=hood
Boot=trunk
B-Pipe= Section of exhaust piping between the header and axle back.
Bulkhead= Firewall
Cam belt= Timing belt
Cat=catalyst=catalytic converter
Coil over= Adjustable absorber
CV Joint=drive shafts= axles
Decat=test pipe
Door Card= Door panel
E-brake = Parking brake or Handbrake
Four branch manfold= Header or Exhaust manifold
Gearbox= Transmission
Gear knob= Shift knob
Induction kit= Intake kit
Inlet manifold = Intake manifold
Mitsubishi = unreliable
Mobile=cellphone
Motor= Engine
Petrol= Gasoline or Fuel
Rocker cover=cam cover or valve cover
Rotor = Disc
Side Marker Lights- Indicator Lights
splitters=extensions
Sump=oil pan
Sway Bar = Anti-Roll Bar
Windscreen = windshield

Abbreviations:
ABS= Anti-lock Brake System
CDM= Canadian Domestic Market
CEL= Check Engine Light
CTR= Civic Type R
EDM= European Domestic Market
EMS= Engine Management System
ECU= Engine Control Unit
ITR= Integera Type R
JDM= Japanese Domestic Market

LSD = Limited Slip Differential
NA or N/A=Naturally Aspirated
RR=Rolling Road=Dyno=Dynamometer
RTA=Rear Trailing Arm
TB= Throttle Body
UKDM=United Kingdom Domestic Market

Internet Slang
IIRC= If i recall correctly

IMHO= In my Honest Opinion or In my Humble Opinion
BTW= by the way

This is all i can think of so far, please add some :) and don't say soccer=football :lol:

cat = catalyst
football = soccer! :angry2: :lol:

Coil over= Adjustable absorber
All motor= Naturally aspirated= N/A
Motor= Engine
Hood= Bonnet

Yeah the bonnet thing had me trippin when I first signed up. I was like "WTF is a bonnet?" I soon figured out it meant hood.

very useful thread, this is!!
bdw...e-brake = parking brake = handbrake

To my knowledge a header has individual tubing, while an exhaust manifold is one cast iron piece.

Back box = muffler
windscreen = windshield
mitsubishi = unreliable

a long time ago that was correct, but now most oem's make there exhaust manifolds cast tubular and still refer to them as exhaust manifolds. like stock 96 civic EX its a 4-2-1 cast tube manifold.

thanks everyone, your info has been added!

Blower= Turbo
Alloy= Sport rims
Cam belt= Timing belt
Door Card= Door Trim

blower can be a supercharger as well, not just a turbo... but one common one that new people to the scene might not be aware of is
CTR- Civic Type R
ITR- Integera Type R
Side Mirrors- Wings
Fender, Side Marker Lights- Indicator Lights
JDM- Japanese Domestic Market
USDM- United States Domestic Market

Some people might not know what these abreviations mean.

I've never heard someone refer to side mirrors as wings. When someone says wing I think like whats on the back of the ITR or any other elevated spoiler.

the following have been added:

rocker cover=cam cover= valve cover

the following have not been added, with reasons below:

shock strut=shock tower- shocks and struts are different parts.
Blower= Turbo-DwP02 explained the problem with this one.
Alloy= Sport rims-this should be self explanatory?
Side Mirrors- Wings-see dinos response.

thank you for all the responses!! :D

We call them wing mirrors.....as in the olden days they were mounted on the wings of the car.

Wing being the piece that has the front wheel arch shaped into it.
