Fitting Exhaust Heat Wrap????

I have removed my OEM 98 spec 4-1 manifold from my car & my intention was to remove all the mounting brackets for the heatsheild & polish up the manifold to look like new!:nice:
Well i have removed all the brackets & polished up half of one pipe, which took me a good 10 hours!:nono:
Well i have decided to be lazy & just go with wraping the Exhaust insted!:p

Well what i am asking is there any tips to wraping a manifold corectly????

I usually just make sure the area is clean and free of rust, then i wrap it tightly (not extremely tight, just firm), i overlap by about 1/2 and you can either use regular clamps or use metal zip ties to hold the end together for a very clean look. P.S. i would try and get white or black wrap, i find the natural color to look horrible, but thats just opinion. Also if you live in an area with lots of moisture/humidity there is a spray to spray on the wrap to water proof it.
 
O it free of rust alrite, as i had it in the sand-blaster last nite!:secret:
I also ground back the welds on the inside of each port for a better flow!:D

if it was a cheap header i would try to use a ceramic coating instead. There are some specialists who do it very well.
 
Lightly moisten the heatwrap with water before applying, this will allow the wrap to curve around the header easier. Make sure to completely air dry afterwards. Also if you do go with using a ceramic coating make sure to allow the coating to cure correctly and only apply the ceramic coating after the heatwrap is completely dried. Follow directions on spray can and there will be no durability issues.

After sanding down the header with 100/320 grit sandpaper, I went with the 1" wrap and used 100' of wrap for my 4-2-1 manifold. Applied ceramic coating both under and over the wrapping. GL.

Well that pretty much covers everything.
 
I`ve heard that heat wrapping isn`t good for the head itself because heat doesn`t escape the header and heats the head instead.

Sounds like you believe what you hear. Honestly that makes no sense. The cylinder head will heat up either way, this is why the oiling/cooling system exists. There are many fables out there but unless you have hard facts then don't believe what you hear.

I consulted a well known local exhaust shop for advice prior to considering exhaust heatwrap and they only warned me against moisture contamination. Where I live we get little to no rain with daily temps of 95degrees Far.+ mostly year round so this was not a big issue with me.

Get us some feedback JIMBOB-EK9. Pics if possible.

Not true at all, in fact i think it would do the opposite. Since more heat is staying inside the exhaust manifold gas it will have more heat energy and move out of the exhaust system much faster. Remember heat=energy, the hotter the exhaust gas the faster it will try to leave the system so it also can reduce some pumping losses and possible gain some power (though thats not its purpose). Turbocharged cars often pick up 500rpm of spool up with properly wrapped manifolds/turbine housings/downpipes since more heat stays in the exhaust it spools the turbo faster :nice:
 
In regards to moisture contamination; what about if you have a vented hood?

The vent in my bonnet in right above the manifold so it it rained water would drip onto the manifold and would soak the heat wrap right through i would guess? :angry:

Or is there a way to water proof the wrap so it wouldnt matter how wet it got?

If you are planning to heatwrap your exhaust manifold and water contamination is inevitable then personally i'd recommend using a clear ceramic coating aka high heat coating. After ceramic coating my header I began wrapping them applying small amounts of water to the heatwrap for ease of installation, I noticed the water would simply bead off the header. Sweet.

In other words ceramic header coating provides waterproofing and anti-corrosion qualities to metal surfaces and the heatwrap itself. Be sure to prep your metal surfaces prior to coating.

This infact is true blinx9900, by retaining heat within headers by use of a good ceramic coating and/or heatwrap it is also said to increase exhaust-gas velocity because hot gasses expand and travel faster as a whole. Kudos Sir. :D
 
Awesome, found a distributor in the UK aswell :D

So coat the header with this spray then wrap and coat the wrap too?

or just coat the header.

Either or but I did both.

My main objective was to coat the heatwrap but then after reading the directions it mentioned that it could be applied directly to metal I chose to do both. You'll have enough with one can. Feedback is welcomed. :D

Just need to decide on what colour to go for and how much wrap to buy.

Despite using 100ft of 1inch wrap I found myself shortly running out and didn't completley cover the back section near the o2 sensor. However this didn't bother me so much because it was so far back and the header was already ceramic coated. Thanks for the rep points. :nice:

Blink9900 recommended against the natural color and with good reason I agree with him as mine turned a dark brown color after the heat wrap cured. Oh well. :)
